<<Your assertion that making currently illegal drugs more readily available won't result in their increased usage is ludicrous.>>

Why would legalization make drugs more available?  Ask any underage student whether it is easier to obtain illegal drugs or alcohol which is legal.  The drug dealer doesn't have to deal with checking ID before selling anything.  Liquor store operators go to jail if they are caught.  Drug dealers make more money in one day than a kid working a burger joint can make in a year. Make drugs legal, as we did alcohol, and usage will go down. In countries that legalize recreational marijuana, the average age of first use is much higher than in countries that keep it illegal. Also, if drugs are legalized, and regulated, the money incentive will go way down and it won't be worth killing over.  Ask yourself what rational person is fighting very hard to keep illegal drugs illegal - the drug dealers, that's who.  Then ask yourself how much this country spends on keeping drug violator imprisoned for life.  We lose productive members of society and we have to pay not only to feed, clothe and house them, but also for security systems and guards to keep them there.  And then figure out how much money the government can make in both license fees and taxes on recreational drugs.

The truth is known in the manner of the beholder, and not in the manner of its existence.  Th. Aquinas

I don't assume that legalization of drugs would go the same way as legalization and control of alcohol and cigarettes is done, because drugs are sold by supposedly legitimate sources in this country. Legalization would just ADD legal avenues without the illegal ones skipping a beat, imho.

If recreational drugs were legal, why would anyone want to buy the illegal drugs? Legal would be safer as far as purity and strength, while the illegal would be dangerous.  When alcohol was re-legalized the only moonshiners left were those in the backwoods country where the taxes were deemed excessive.  Of course, some died from the moonshine, and, since the legal stuff was so inexpensive and pure, sales increased, and moonshiners are rare today.

Keeping drugs illegal today only makes the kingpins super rich and keeps the prices so high one has to either make an awful lot of money legally or turn to crime to support the habit.  As with alcohol, legal drugs would be more affordable, so the illicit dealers, losing the profit motive, woould go into politics.  Remember, Joe Kennedy made his money during prohibition, and after it was legalized he set about making one of his boys president.  Can you picture, in 30 years, a drug kingpin's child being president?  Hey, why not?
