9 Surprising Germ Havens

If you had to guess the germiest places in your home, you’d probably name the usual suspects, like the toilet and the trash can, right? True, but germs are sneaky, and experts say that some of the most surprising places in your house (hello, bath towels!) may be harboring harmful bacteria and viruses. Keep reading to find out where to find these germ hideaways and how to get rid of the offenders.

  • Germ Haven #1: Used Bath Towels
  • Germ Haven #2: Washing Machine
  • Germ Haven #3: Computer Keyboard
  • Germ Haven #4: Carpets and Rugs
  • Germ Haven #5: Beds
  • Germ Haven #6: Salt and Pepper Shakers
  • Germ Haven #7: Bathtub
  • Germ Haven #8: Child’s Potty Chair
  • Germ Haven #9: Refrigerator

As I am sitting here typing on my computer keyboard, I am thinking of other places that I know of that are germ havens.  I have always heard that the remote control in a hotel room is the worse place.  The maids clean and wipe down almost everything except for the remote control.

Can you think of any other places that are a germ's version of Disneyland?

Hmmmmm, I reuse my bath towel a couple times a week... I hang it up to dry in my bedroom so no one else uses it.  I guess I get clean then germ myself up! =)

I am surprised the purses and phones aren't on the list!

I reuse my bath towel as well.  I am sure it gets germs sitting in the linen closet or whatever folded up waiting to be used, so what is the difference?  You have to have some germs

I agree about purses and phones.  Money, money, money is the worst.  When I see some of the criminals on the other side of the counter paying their fines off, it makes you wonder where that money has been.  Oh, if the money could tell stories.

I recently read a message somewhere else about where people store their money and how it grosses out cashiers.  I always thought it was super gross to get sweaty money they pull out of their pocket.  I know a lot of women keep their money/cell phones etc in their bra... Um...really?  What is their bra, some kind of vault?  I have no doubt mine would fall out of my bra and I don't really want to have to reach in my bra to answer my phone!!

Years ago, I worked in a bingo hall as part of a community project - I worked the register, and so many of the women would dig around in their 'bosoms' and hand me a wad of sweaty, warm dollar bills.  It was truly disgusting!

YUCK!  So gross!  I am just trying to imagine a bra that would securely hold that.  Hey, maybe we should create purse bras or bras with pockets!

For all we know, there's probably such a contraption!  LOL

Some of those women rooted around so much, you had to wonder what else they had in there!

I recently read a message somewhere else about where people store their money and how it grosses out cashiers.

We have had homeless people, or indigents, come in to pay on fines, and take off their shoes and pull it out of their socks.  Truly disgusting.

Now, over at the jail, they find all sorts of things in orifices.  We hear stories all the time where crack pipes and money are stored.

One prostitute was being visited by the cardinal at that time, and had her money stored in a baggie in her vajajay.  She figured that was the safest place for it.  Who would go after it there?

Unfortunately, the police had to.

I take a big supply of Clorox wet wipes in a large baggie, to the hotel when we're in SC. The door handle, inside and out, is the very first thing I wipe, then the tv remote and telephone. Everyday I do. I use my own pillow and check the sheets really good. Ive been known to put small dots of ink on opposite corners of the fitted sheet and the flat sheet. That way it tells me if the hotel maids, changed them.

Christine,

My ex-boyfriend and his mom managed a hotel.  I worked there the summer after my senior year of high school,  and I can tell you the sheets do not get changed every day.  Normally, the maids just make the bed, unless a guest is checking out - and the room needs to be made ready for the next guest, or if the guest requests them.  If you want clean sheets everyday,  the best thing to do is strip the bed your self,  and leave the sheets for the maid to take.

I remember watching an episode of Myth Busters, where they tested certain myths about germs.  The cleanest thing in the hotel room was the toilet seat!  The dirtiest was the television's remote control - as you already stated.

I re-use my towels, I wash them twice a week.  I always assumed that since I was clean when I used my towel, this was fine.
