After being frustrated by this bug since 8.1 was released, and following the change to the destiniation of several of the in-built netscape feeds that frustrated others,  I delved into the NS8 code.........

The attached  browser.jar  fixes the following 3 problems with 8.1:-
  1. Inability to add RSS Feeds
  2. Inability to disable the new Back Button of Death 'feature' (BBoD)
  3. Inability to resize the Options window.
You can now:-
  1. Add RSS Feeds via the orange RSS widget in the URL Window for a sites that support them, try one of 29 available at NewScientist.com

  2. If you click the Back button on a tab without any History, it is no longer closed.
Note in some themes the drop down marker is still active, click it and you get a popup menu from which you can choose 'close tab' to close the tab, useful if the tab is an overflow one. (ie too many opened)

  3. The options window can now be resized.
I had to make it slightly larger as by default NS8 it resizes it with almost everytime option you select. Unfortunately this means it won't remember your new size, but at least you can stretch it to view everything if you're using a font at 10pt or greater.
While thes are unsupported fixes, they seem to work fine for me,  and have been tested by other forum users without any hitches, All 3 fixes for a few days, see here ....  The BBoD fix, for a few months, see here.

To install:-
  1. Exit NS8

  2. Backup the original NS8  browser.jar  in your:
           c:\program files\Netscape\Netscape Browser\chrome    folder

  3. Download the one attached here to this folder.

  4. Rename this new one to  browser.jar
If you have any problems, just put the original one back.

fwiw, all changes are commented, search on my id to find them.

Looks promising.  I'll download it, try it out some, let you know how it goes.

Woo, double-post.
Anyway, it seems to work well for me, but then again I've only really tested one aspect of it: the BBoD part.  Haven't ever really used RSS before.

Great fix.  Thanks for doing what Netscape / AOL should have fixed long ago.  Hope AOL will put them in their next release.

It amazes me that "Netscape" created "RSS" feeds way back in release 0.91 and then broke it so they do not work in release 8.1.  And THEN, they don't quickly fix it.

Thank you very much.  The fixes work perfectly (for me)!

Good to here,  just let me know if you come across any 'side effects'

>  then broke it so they do not work in release 8.1

It seems they were in the process of adding a 'preview' feature, but unfortunately it was a work in progress when 8.1 came out, unfortunately with the add feature broken....  this wouldn't be quite so bad except that......

let me know how you get on if you try ro add an RSS feed....

Also, if you've missed the 'Open Containing Folder' feature of the Download Mgr, I've just posted a fix up for that....

>  it seems to work well for me, but then again I've only really tested one aspect of it: the BBoD part.

I've fairly confident that the BBoD fix is fine as its been out there for a few months, its the RSS one  & Resize Options Windows that have had less testing/feedback......

Your fix sounds like just what I need!

When I try to download it, though, I get this error:

The XML page cannot be displayed

Cannot view XML input using style sheet.

And:

An invalid character was found in text content. Error processing resource 'http://community.netscape.com/n/docs/docDownload...

Is there something I should change to download?

Thanks for the help,

Alex

Try a Right Mouse Click on the .jar file and then select Save As  to download the file.

If you still have problems, you can find a repackaged NS 8.1 installer with the fixes added in this post by Pu7o on SillyDog.  If you're prepared for a re-install this provides another option.

Hello! I tried to use this in Netscape 8.1.2 to see if it fixed a problem I had but It did not. When I go to the .xml page to get the rss feed I do not get the RSS orange button. I do get the "ADD HEADLINES" button. When I press on that and add the feed to the toolbar it shows up blank. But when I go to the prefs.js file and I take out the "feed:" part from the URLs it then works fine!!!

These fixes were added to an 8.version 1 module, as this module changed in 8.1.2, using them will leave you with a bit of a 'hybrid' NS8 version., so  watchout for strange NS8 behaviour.....

fwiw, here's the reason behind not porting them to 8.1.2

OK, I've had a change of heart,  attached is an 8.1.2 version of  browser.jar that add the following function to 8.1.2:-
  • Ability to add RSS Feeds
  • Disables the new Back Button of Death 'feature' (BBoD)
  • Allows you to resize the Options window.
To install:-
  1. Exit NS8

  2. Backup the original NS8   browser.jar   in your:

           c:\program files\Netscape\Netscape Browser\chrome      folder

  3. Download the one attached here to this folder.

  4. Rename this new one to  browser.jar
If you have any problems, just put the original one back.

Hello.  All of you in this discussion seem to be really savvy in the technical area.  I am an ordinary user, but can read and understand what you have written.  My NS 8 has been frozen for 3+ days.  In desperation, I went to this discussion group to try to get help.

So I saw the file, Browser_Fixes_RSS_BBoD_OptionsResizing_NS_8.1.2.jar, but if I try to double-click it to download it, I get an error message.  And it will not copy in the Netscape...\chrome folder.  Without being able to open this link, I cannot download this file, nor replace the regular browser.jar with this new one.  I did back up the original browser. jar as you recommended.

So can you tell me what I can do now?

I'm ready to give up on Netscape forever.  They should never let this kind of really, really serious problem last so long without doing something.  How do they expect to keep us as customers??

Help, please.

Try the updated instructions found here

Then use the workaround for either:-  (Use  Help --> About  to find your version)
let us know how you get on.....

Note: THe instructions are the same for both versions...

I've ported the fixes to NS 8.1.3 and attached an 8.1.3 version below.

See this entry in the NS8 Hints & Tips Folder for full details.
