Love Oyster Shooters? Think Again

Oysters can harbor some really unpleasant viruses in a process known as "bioaccumulation" and give us diarrhea, cramps and vomiting. Researchers are asking whether shellfish should be purified before consumption.

A new study found that oysters midgut and other tissues concentrate noroviruses (formerly Norwalk-like viruses), which are the primary cause of "stomach flu," in its tissue.

The study appeared in the June issue of the journal
Emerging Infectious Diseases.

These viruses are not removed by depuration, the process of holding live oysters in clean water to remove pollutants from their digestive system. Oyster farms in coastal areas are at risk of being contaminated by human sewage.

Calling bioaccumulation a "serious public health issue," because oysters harbor human pathogens, the researchers made the implicit suggestion that shellfish should be purified before human consumption.

That is why God placed the oyster, clam, scallop etc. in the unclean category.

They eat and live in excrement ALL of their lives they are not fit for human consumption.

That must mean they're particularly beloved of God, if He has made them in a way that human beings can't eat them :)

Very best wishes,
