I agree. I removed V8 as soon as I realized it no longer had mail and composer. I might as well use Explorer and Outlook. I have no idea what they were thinking and why they dont tell people it has been removed BEFORE you waste the time to downlaod and install.

its not like they've kept it a secret. if youve read anything about netscape 8, you know that its only a browser. even the netscape download page says "netscape browser".

yes. the evil netscape told everyone that netscape 8 was a suite, but they lied. its only the browser. why didnt they tell us?... what? they did? oops. sorry. my bad.

Give me a break.

I am in the software business. We tell customers when we remove critical functionality. We dont leave it as a well read between the lines.  You know, a lot of people on here agree that they want the email back. I am not some browser junkie that follows every development tweak between the vendors. I am a user. I need a browser and email. I actually have a job I need to do. My one of choice was Netscape. They have made changes that make it so I cannot continue and need to change.

By the way, do you feel better after slagging people? Sure makes me feel good about being a Netscape user after your comments. If you have constructive comments I would love to hear them. If you want to slag me or mock me keep it to yourself. You aren't helping Netscape keep any customers. It makes me even less likely to want to try to figure out how to continue using the product.

thanks for your help - NOT!

How 'bout a definitive answer from a Netscape employee ?!

It was a marketing blunder that it wasn't made clear that Netscape 8 wasn't an upgrade but rather a NEW application that was/is a browser only, no mail, news or composer, etc. We're pushing for an email client, much the same as Thunderbird is to Firefox.

Cheers

It seems to me when I read the opions of all the posts here they arer running at least 100 to 1 in favor of the netscape browser suite and not the standalone Firescape browser. You always seem to be irritated by this. Don't  you and the powers that be  have this feedback  forum  so you can get a handle on what people want. Stop defending Firescape as it is. Use it  as a springboard to a truly great browser  comparable to Netscape 7.2 with the added good features of  Firescape 8 or scrap that dog completely.

I wlll continue to defend Netscape 8 for what it is, a browser- only application - for which it is intended to be, not a suite. We are pushing for an email client in some form.

And Netscape 8 is only "sourced" from FF 1.0. It doesn't look like FF, doesn't feel like FF and what's more, NS 8 is much more secure with the addition of Site Controls .. And .. The tab browser feature and preferences are much more in tune with the user's preferences. Not perfect yet but getting there.

Opinion noted.

I just tried using that "-quiet" switch.  There is a slightly perceptible increase in starting speed, but something else has changed for the better.  Originally, if I was running another application at the time I started Netscape, it would always come up beneath the active application window; I would then have to minimize the first application to use the browser.  Now Netscape comes up on top, like it should.  I guess the splash screen was causing the problem.  Thanks for the tip, Jay!

As for the turbo mode, I tried that, and it works, but I don't like part of Netscape loitering around in the memory once I close it.  ;-)

If you're running a fast machine then you really don't need quick launch anyways. And besides you really don't need a splash screen any longer like in the Communicator days where the splash screen actually indicated problems with plugins and bookmarks launching, etc.

I would like to have my screen back. There is far too much clutter in Netscape-8.  The top, the bottom... why do I want all this useless stuff?  I would much prefer to have a better (bigger) view of the pages I'm browsing. I hope future versions will at least let me toggle off the pointless lines of dead space. Thank you.

You can whittle it down to a very lean and clean interfact by using the "customize" feature to drag items and buttons back to the customize window. Also, using the multibar feature will allow you to spread out many items that clutter up just ONE toolbar. Lots for you to explore ....

A quick and easy way to achieve this is to press F11   (View --> Full Screen).     The unwanted clutter goes until you hit F11 again.

Translation from Google:

Serious good that they included support to him for mail like in the previous versions (7.x, 6.x 4.x) and that the own version was developed.... and not based on demas.. type firefox, I am anti Microsoft... and therefore I have been usuary of Netscape from the version 2.x for win 3,1 but the version 8 has me desepcionado, is but slow that the previous versions and does not have client for mail (pop and imap), by my account I continue using the version 7.2 that to my criterion is the best one.

I'M NOT SURE IF THIS MESSAGE IS GOING TO THE NETSCAPE PEOPLE, BUT IF NOT, I RESPECT. ASK THAT IT FORWARDED TO THEM BESIDES THE USER COMMUNITY HERE.  THANKS!

A PROMINENT button to Netscape link that tells the user what current problems are plaguing the 1)system, 2)Netscape servers, 3) Netscape feature  so that one doesn't have to wonder if problems, e.g., accessing one's My.Netscape.Com webpage is based on something in one's computer or its a system problem.  Also, that link could have a date and an Update Status on how the progress is going in fixing this problem.  If a good help desk could be incorporated into the Netscape Co. in its browser package, I would even pay a fixed $1.00 a month.

PS:  Can ANYONE out there in Netscape land give me a hint on how I could fix this not able to access MyNetscape page?

If you had been reading the proliferation of messages here on this forum regarding the MyNetscape problem then you can save that $1.00 fee. The MyNetscape problem is that of AOL/Netscape and not an application problem. Many users that "had" the problem are reporting that it's fixing itself, so patience is the key.

I appreciate your quick response, Jay.  I did read many of the messages re this problem (about 1 hours worth) and the common thread that I saw was that there's a lack of communication on these types of problems -- the users are being left on the lurch.  Now I don't know the corporate relationship between AOL and Netscape's people but its discouraging that a good program like Netscape is being treated like a polit. football.  Someone somewhere is not being held accountable.  I will stick with my offer to pay $1.00 a month if some corporate officer will institute a little more of a help-desk function.  At least an email from AOL or Netscape heads, to Netscape registered users or MyNetscape users would have prevented all the users that wrote from having to go to great lengths to "guess" what the problem could be.  Another thing, this Forum is fairly well hidden and I would suggest that a prominent place be reserved for users to know it exists and a quick link.  Anyway, Jay, I'd nominate you to head this proposed help-desk since you have a feel for the community.  BTW, I finally did type out WWW.my.netscape.com in my browser and lo and behold SOME of my webpage came back, sans some of the contents I had configured way back since 4.7 and 7.2 versions.  KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!   ---ALEX
