Indeed, Netscape 8.0.1 Kills XML in IE 6

I tried, as suggested, deleting the registry key ".xml" of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\Extension and IE still failed to render XML. So I uninstalled Netscape 8. Unfortunately if Netscape 8 remains installed then the registry key is continually rewritten so this is an essential step if you are to be able to view XML content in IE.

When I installed Netscape 8 with the option to use only the Firefox rendering engine rather than IE. I noticed that when I selected 'clear my tracks now' from the clear history browser button that it wiped out my IE 6 history and cookies as well.

These are issues that I think everyone should be aware of.  If Netscape can make a release that gives me the choice and doesn't wipe out my IE 6 history and cookies and that lets IE function as its designed rather than reconfiguring it into a non-functional capacity maybe then I will consider installing Netscape 8.

We apologize for the inconvenience that this bug has caused you. This certainly isn't desired behavior and we didn't even intentionally change that registry key.  The development team is hard at work on a patch.

Thanks,

I found a workaround, of sorts.

I deleted the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\Extension\ XML key and then opened IE and tried the link, http://msdn.microsoft.com/xml/rss.xml and a blank page was displayed.  I checked with regedit and the registry key had been added back:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.xml]
"Content Type"="text/xml"
"Version"="2004, 0, 0, 1"
@="Trident Plugin for Netscape"
"Location"="C:\\Program Files\\Netscape\\Netscape Browser\\PLUGINS\\npTrident.dll"

But if I deleted the registry key again, and then RENAMED npTrident.dll to Xnptrident.dll then the XML page  displayed properly in Internet Explorer, and the key was no longer added back  but, of course, that disabled the Netscape 8 "View as IE" feature.

This same issue is also being discussed by Dave Massy, a senior programme manager for IE who warned users in a blog posting at http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/05/25/421763.aspx that after installing Netscape 8, IE will render XML files as a blank page, including XML files that have an XSLT transformation.

If you have installed Netscape 8 and you try viewing in Internet Explorer an xml page like the one mentioned at the above blog, http://msdn.microsoft.com/xml/rss.xml or another provided by the BBC, http://news.bbc.co.uk/rss/newsonlin...nt_page/rss.xml then you will most likely be provided with a blank page.

The workaround from the above mentioned blog for this problem unfortunately suggests uninstalling Netscape 8 and is copied below:

"We currently have the following work around for people that are hitting this issue:

1. Uninstall Netscape 8
2. START->RUN
I. Type: regedit
II. Hit ENTER
III. Navigate to the following:
IV. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\Extension
V. Highlight and right-click the node titled "xml" and select delete.
VI. Restart Internet Explorer

Unfortunately if Netscape 8 remains installed then the registry key is continually rewritten so this is an essential step if you are to be able to view XML content in IE. "

A much simpler short term solution that doesn't involve uninstalling a competitor's software would be to just view xml pages with Firefox or Netscape 8 as long as you choose the Display like Firefox option.   Or as Alice suggested just delete the offensive registry key and rename the trident plugin but then you lose the benefit of being able to Display like Internet Explorer option.

Netscape is looking into the problem already and will probably issue a more permanent solution soon.
