The economy is still very shaky, and I don't see much improvement before 2012.

Since Dale's death, there will be much less money coming into the household.  I did a quick computation and concluded that the monthly income will be decreased by about $2500.  I will have to live mighty close to the bone!  Of course there will be fewer expenses, too, because we were out and around almost every day.

I'll get rid of one car, but I don't know yet which one.  I'd love to keep the little Scion, but it's not paid for yet.  The paid-for Odyssey has about 110,000 miles on it.  It just depends on whether I can make the Scion car payment.  Of all years to have a disastrous crop!  There won't even be any farm income.  I'm holding off on making any decisions until I know exactly what my income will be.

I tend to agree with you. Personally, my income took a huge hit this year, and the ability to replace that is not proving easy. We are still seeing home forclosures in my neighborhood, and the investors that swooped in to buy after the first wave, and rent those out, many are now sitting empty. The commercial foreclosures seem to be on the rise too.

I have noticed lower prices at the grocery store though, so that's helpful. And for those who have money, there's some great deals to be found with all types of electronics.

The price of gas is slowly creeping up though.

Oh gosh Dot, that's alot of money. It's awful to have to worry about money at a time like this. I know when my husband died I had to do the same thing, and for a few years there were several times I couldn't even pay my electric bill and had to double up the next month. I hope you're able to come up with a budget that doesn't hurt.

Dot,

Just a reminder as I'm sure you are aware, now is not the time to make any major decisions.

I think any workable budget I come up with will hurt, but I'm hoping I don't have to juggle bills.  This is a terrible time for crops to be almost 95% ruined; I was counting on my share of the farm income.  If the crops had been as good as they first appeared to be, before the rains set in, there was a good chance we could sell the farm and be done with the estate distributions.

I've had at least two angry exchanges with one of my brothers over exactly that.  I keep insisting that I can't make a decision until I see what my household income will be, and how I can manage it.  He gets pushy, and I get angry.  My SIL, bless her, gets embarrassed at his pushiness and apologizes, but it's not her fault.  I've decided the next time he does something like that, I will calmly say, "I am hanging up now."  <click>  There's no need in getting all steamed up over things that can't be dealt with yet.

Dot,

I don't have any siblings, but I do have a pushy neighbor.  Demands when and how I should care for my yard.  After several years, I finally told him I'd care for my yard anyway he wanted, just after he started making the mortgage payments. (G)  We're still good friends.  Ofcourse now if I mow, then it sets off the entire block.  I think there is a secret society that says "If Bob has mowed his yard and you haven't, then you better get after it".
