I was in a big box store recently (Hobby Lobby) and was shocked to see them stocking the shelves with Christmas decorations.  I thought that was crazy, but then I decided it was because "crafters" like to make their decorations early.  But July?  I just read in today's The Wall Street Journal that malls are calling this Christmas in July.  They are trying to entice shoppers to do their Christmas shopping early.  It's a bit much for me.

As we got older, my husband and I quit giving presents to each other.  We decided we could just buy what we want.  I guess we're the practical type.  Last year, our older son and daughter-in-law suggested not giving presents to adults, only to kids.  So we'll buy something for our grandson.  We'll probably give our younger son money unless he tells us what he wants.  But I'm not doing Christmas shopping in July!

Christmas in July?  I suspect it's as you suggested, crafters like to get an early start.

OTOH, fall catalogs are arriving in my mailbox and the newspaper ads have been touting back to school sales all month. No doubt we'll be seeing Halloween and Thanksgiving stuff in the stores any day now.  ;-(

Oh, and I'm with you.  No exchange of presents between adults although we still give our grandchildren (both in their mid to late twenties) cash.  Hard habit to break.

When I worked downtown, my shopping was always done early, because I was only two blocks from the department stores. Now, shopping isn't that convenient, and on-line stores don't have those same mark-down sales, so I mostly shop later.

However, I saw some cheap (2/$10) and wonderful LED flashlights in Walgreen's the other day, and bought one for a friend's gift as well as one for me! <tried to find a link to these but they're not on Walgreen's web site).

When I had young children, I shopped for them all year long and hid them.  Our younger son almost always found them though.  One year, I even put them under the insulation in the attic and he found them.  I think he had more fun trying to outsmart me.

Until around 7 years ago, I had no children to shop for ... now I have a great-nephew, and anonther great-child on the way. I'm hoping the new one is a girl -- 'cause girl stuff is so cute... but I won't have to worry about that until Christmas of 2010.

Yes, girl things are cute and I have dolls which I saved.  However, I had 2 boys and one grandson.

I'm sure we will all be happy with whatever comes along -- girl or boy.

You are right.  The most important aspect of a child is that he or she is healthy.
