I buy CDs online and in stores, and I download music from Amazon and iTunes.

I don't listen to the radio much any more because it's all a bunch of corporate drones deciding what we want to listen to.  I gather the idea is that people will hear something familiar every time they turn on the radio.  The problem is, we're familiar with a lot more songs than they are.

Some I download but most are either my kids' hand me ups or some cheapie CD (5 for £2) with one or two tunes I recognize.

Most of the cheapie stuff is quite awful but occassionally I get a good one like the one on German Beer Drinking Songs.  I could sing along to that without knowing what the lyrics meant.

The hand me ups vary a lot.  Some are quite good, some are quite awful.  If you filter out the tune from the awful singing, the tunes are pretty good.  The youngsters are pretty good musicians: they just can't sing.

I only do downloads on stuff I can't find in the shops and I know they'll never stock it.

One thing I really like about downloads is that you can choose just the songs you want, instead of having to buy an album full of drivel to get one or two good songs.

I like to check CDs out of the library, too, for the same reason.  If I find one song I like I can then get that one song from Amazon or iTunes.  Just recently I checked out the album that contained the song "You Know My Name" that was used in the movie "Casino Royale."  The rest of the album was awful.

Most often I listen to the radio--not to the corporate drivel, but to our local public radio stations's 24/7 classical service. When the station split into the classical service and the mostly endless yak-yak service, the classical signal was too weak to be played on a regular radio. So I bought an HD radio and generally get a good signal. Like other digital signals, it sometimes has problems. I can also listen to a live stream over the Net, but the live stream is not as reliable as I'd like and it occasionally drops.

On Sunday mornings we listen to the stream of Soul Music from KUSC in California. It's a two-hour show of religious choral music (classical) and my husband and I call it our "church." We are both nonreligious but the music is great. Soul Music is on at the unjgodly hour of 7 a.m. in California, which is 10 a.m. in our time zone and much more acceptable.

I also have about 18 gigs of music on my computer, all of it legally downloaded and primarily classical of all genres.

There's no time left for anything else.

Marte,

Most of my music consists of CDs that were recorded by choirs in which I sang...or still sing, so I was part of the choir doing the recording.  They consist mostly of classical oratorios and anthems, with accompaniment by the Fort Worth Symphony.  A few are of the hymn festivals my church choir presents almost every fall, and we usually invite a couple of other choirs to join us.  Imagine a beautiful church, cathedral style with white walls and stained glass windows, a 10-year-old Cassavant organ that is very large, a choir of at least 200 voices, and all of the congregation holding hymnals and singing with us - and the orchestra.  It's a marvelous experience, and is always recorded.

Other than that, I listen to the local classical station, where the commercials are short and do not interrupt the music, and where the music is of the highest quality.  Oh...and I've bought a few CDs that some of my favorite soloists have made for sale.

...Betty

I buy CD online and in stores.  I also buy at yard sales when they have something unique that is hard to find otherwise.

You left out "All of the above"

I have a very extensive collection of CD's (And even vinyl) some purchased in Music Stores,  Some purchased in "other" stores (I buy a lot from Dodeka Music, a publishing house, but from their table at conventions)

I also download, and listen to radio programs.

The "Giveaway Of The Day" was a internet radio manager a few days ago, It will let you listen to or listen and record one station, or record (Without listening) up to 10 as I recall,, perhaps more.

The URL for GOTD is buried in this LINK.  They rotate software.. Some of it I'd not recommend.. Some of it I already bought and paid for (And do recommend)

My husband worked at KUSC for 17 years.  :)  We have not had much luck with HD radio.  The content available is mediocre, for the most part, although there's one HD service that plays "standards" (Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, etc) that's very well done.  We need to put up an outside antenna to get any kind of reasonable signal because there's a range of mountains between us and Mt. Wilson where all the transmitters are.  My husband's been going to do that since we moved into this place in 1994.  You'd think a broadcast engineer would be more motivated.  :)

I enjoy listening to classical music, but the two classical stations in LA seem to be stuck in the same rut as the chain-gang commercial outfits.  You'd think with 400+ years worth of music to choose from, they wouldn't feel the need to play "The Moldau" and "The Four Seasons" and other such old warhorses ALL the time.

Of course, sometimes the old warhorses sound pretty good.  The LA Philharmonic has a new conductor and they celebrated with a free concert at the Hollywood Bowl last night, broadcast live on KUSC, and the last piece was a dynamite rendition of Beethoven's 9th.

I think "heavenly" would be just the right word to describe that concert, Betty.  :)

My husband is an organist and loves listening to organ music.  Years ago I read in an audiophile magazine about a collection of CDs that was supposed to be the best ever recordings of Bach's organ compositions.  I had to drive all the way out to Tower Records on the far reaches of Sunset to buy it for him for Christmas.  But it was worth it.  He still listens to it often.

There are several stores in LA that sell used CDs.  We often get them from our favorite used-book store.

My daughter's a big fan of Pandora, the streaming internet music service.  I haven't gotten into that yet.  So much music, so little time.

I'm a "classical" music person and despite recent changes at CBC Radio can still get program of music on FM from 9 am to 2 pm from Monday to Friday.  CBC Radio-2 still carries the Metropolitan Opera on Saturdays and operas from other companies when the Met is quiet.

Having said that, my serious listening really comes from CDs and still, occasionally, from LPs.

Do you remember the name of the collection, Marte?  I too was an organist before arthritis made it painful.  My organ teacher went to Germany to study Bach under Helmut Walch.  I have a lot of Walch's recordings but they're almost all from the mono era.

It's called Johann Sebastian Bach: L'oeuvre d'Orgue (the organ works) performed by Lionel Rogg.  I just checked and it's still available from Amazon in their "used and new" section.

You can find it here.  Not cheap, but definitely worth the money.

Since you guy like organ music, do you ever go to the concerts at the First Congregational Church on 6th and Commonwealth?

The annual Bach Organ Festival is coming up.  Notice the date screw up on their web page <G>
