"Unable to write the email to the mailbox.“
Many users have been experiencing this error warning lately.
The most likely cause is a corrupt Inbox file, caused by not compacting the Inbox, overloading the Inbox by leaving too many messages in it, or probably both. Try these steps:
1) File>>Compact Folders. It may take quite a while. Do not use NS Mail until the compaction process is complete. Try again. If this does not work, try step 2.
2) Close Netscape completely, including Quick Launch. Navigate to your profile folder, the location of which can be found in NS 7 Hints/Tips, “Where is the Profile?”. Locate the Mail folder, and the sub folder for your account, named for the pop3 server. Find and delete the file Inbox.msf. Do not delete the file Inbox with no extension, that is where your mail is stored. Try again. If this does not work, try step 3.
3) Close Netscape again, including Quick Launch.
Go back to your profile folder, Mail folder, account sub folder, and
find the file Inbox, with no extension. Rename this file to OldInbox. Restart Netscape.
You should find a new Inbox folder in the folder pane, which will be empty. Try to download mail. It should work.
You should also find a new folder called OldInbox. This will have all your old Inbox mail. There is no step 4, this should work.
To keep this from happening again, do not use your Inbox as a long term repository for saved mail.
The Inbox file takes quite a beating as the entry portal for all your
mail. The bigger it gets, the more likely you are to have problems.
Create custom folders to archive the mail you want to save, call them
Work, Personal, or whatever suits your needs.
Do not create these storage folders as sub-folders of Inbox. Rather,
put them on the same level as Inbox, or put them in the Local Folders
account. Move all mail you need to have saved to these folders, keeping
Inbox as lean as possible.
Compact the folders regularly. You can automate this:
Edit>>Preferences>>Mail & Newsgroups>>Offline and disk space.
Choose to have folders compacted when it will save x kb. The default is
100, which for my purposes is a little low. I set for 750. You will now
get a warning when you reach whatever the threshold is. You can choose
to go ahead, or cancel, and do it manually later. Do not try to access
a folder while it is being compacted. Wait for the compaction process
to be complete.
If you went as far as step 4, you can move all
the mail stored now in OldInbox to the appropriate archive folders you
have created. Once you have saved all you want to save, delete OldInbox.
