Kwispelbier Web Site
(in Dutch)
The brewer says her dog should enjoy a cold one just as she does after a long day of hunting. But beer for dogs? It was the inevitable next step for "man's best friend." What do you think? Is it going overboard?
Gerrie Berendsen, a pet shop owner in Zelhelm, Netherlands, asked why her Weimaraner should be left out of the post-hunt soire. The answer was 'no,' and she contracted the Schelde microbrewery in 's-Gravenpolder to come up with a beer -- for dogs.
According to the Dutch press, Kwispelbier (tail-wagging beer) contains beef extract, multiple vitamins and malt, but no alcohol. The first batch was about 925 gallons (3,500L). Success at the store will determine whether to brew more.
The cost at launch was about $9 for a pack of four 11-ounce (330 mL) bottles. It's a little spendy compared to a bottle of Heineken that retails locally for about $0.55 a bottle.
What do you think? Is it going overboard?
