Do you see what I see? Sarah Palin is hitting back at Levi Johnston in the press for saying that she refers to little Trig as retarded.

We have purposefully ignored the mean spirited, malicious and untrue attacks on our family. We, like many, are appalled at the inflammatory statements being made or implied. Trig is our 'blessed little angel' who knows it and is lovingly called that every day of his life. Even the thought that anyone would refer to Trig by any disparaging name is sickening and sad. CBS should be ashamed for continually providing a forum to propagate lies.

Notice she doesn't exactly deny it.

What do you think of Palin's remark in the above issued statement that "CBS should be ashamed for continually providing a forum to propagate lies"?

Is she right? After all, can you imagine if a whole network gave liars their own shows where they do lie on a daily basis, and organize activists on those lies? It'd be terrible!

I am not surprised that she would call that poor baby retarded, she probably thought she was being funny. This woman isn’t working with all cylinders. If Sarah has a problem, she should take it up with Levi, and not CBS.

I thought the far more damaging allegation was something to the effect that Palin would say "let me hug the cute one"--the daughter's baby --in clear preference to her own child.

It was worse than this actually, as I recall, but I don't have the link handy at the moment.

This stuff doesn't have the flavor of something Johnston made up..it's too oddly prosaic.. Palin always struck me as heartless ambition made flesh..her record as Mayor of Wasilla is full of paranoia and persecution of her perceived enemies.

Palin's quite a character in any case. I think it's very much worth keeping track of her..she's a face of the right-wing id, and as such can be usefully revealing.

I have to defend Sarah on this one. She may have a baby, but she also has a grandson and that one is probably cute too.

What's strange about all this isn't inappropriate words but the vicious cycle of dueling press releases.

She could have easily said, yep, sure...we have sweet pet names for each other around the house and like most families we never man it to be mean-spirited. What's motivating the huffiness? Why the need to respond tit-for-tat and have an assistant or lawyer issue an official statement to prove to the world how PC you are in private?

She appears to be one of those people who will cry “You hit me” every time you say something. That is how she stays in the headlines. Evidently it worked in Alaska, but will grow very old in the lower 48.

It's my personal point of view that CBS did viewers a disservice by allowing Johnston to make those remarks about something that could be very harmful to Palin, including things she did as governor. He then went on to say he wasn't going to reveal what those things were.

This is responsible news reporting? This is a professional interview involving a prominent political figure?

To me, it's hack reporting designed to raise ratings and nothing more. Whether a person likes Palin or not - and I don't - that doesn't mean I want sensationalism to pass for intelligent reporting. If that's all I wanted, I'd be a fan of FAUX News.

At the time, the late Martha Mitchell, the wife of then AG John Mitchell, was viewed as a "colorful character", like Levi Johnston, and when she alleged the White House was engaged in illegal activities her claims were attributed to mental illness. Ultimately, however, the relevant facts of theWatergate scandal vindicated her.

Information can originate from the most unlikely source.

Martha Mitchell was no Levi Johnston, imho, Jim. Martha was convinced the White House was using her husband as a scapegoat to protect Nixon. She called responsible, if young, reporters to tell them what she thought. [Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein] She didn't go on national television to tattle on a near in-law, making sly comments about that person. She didn't tantalize with "I know something no one else knows but I'm not going to tell you what it is", coming across as nothing more than an angry, bitter, former son-in-law to be. What's his game? Does he stop to think of how his handling all this may affect his baby someday, Palin's grandson?

I even agree with something Palin said:

Taking Johnston and CBS to task, Palin questions the credibility of somebody about to bare all for Playgirl.

"Consider the source of the most recent attention-getting lies," she says. "Those who would sell their body for money reflect a desperate need for attention and are likely to say and do anything for even more attention."

Sure, something may come out of this, but I still think it's irresponsible for CBS to be playing with this "story" for days, minus anything more than Johnston's comments.

As for Martha Mitchell, she wrote in her high school yearbook next to her picture the year she graduated: “I love its gentle warble/ I love its gentle flow/ I love to wind my tongue up/ And I love to let it go.” <s> Everyone, including Nixon (who was warned by Mitchell but only replied that he shouldn't worry about it) knew she said what was on her mind and didn't hold back. It just seems like a totally different case to me with Johnston. No doubt he knows things we never heard of, being so close to the Palin family since he was a kid. We'll learn more in time, just as everyone learned about Watergate, if what Johnston is implying is true. I just don't like this type of sensationalism at a time when reporting is already as far from what it's supposed to be as possible.

Moreover, if Johnston knows something about Palin that happened while she was serving as governor of Alaska, he should really be talking to persons in a position to go after her, or doesn't he care about the people of Alaska as much as he cares about being in the spotlight?

Barbara,
One can only want what Sarah said when informed by her daughter that she was pregnant, and what else was said during the time of the campaign. It was so obvious during the Convention that Levi didn’t want to be there.
