Depressed Swedes Turn to Light Cafes
Without sunlight, our bodies can go berserk. In Sweden, where daylight barely lasts several hours in winter, a new form of light "therapy" is becoming popular. Do you feel down or experience depressive moods in winter?
Seasonal Affective Disorder [SAD] affects about one in five Swedes,
research shows
. And serotonin uptake mechanism plays a key role in winter depression.
Anti-depressants and light therapy are two widely used treatments in Sweden. But those who want to avoid the sterile (and possibly depressing) environment of a hospital can now pay about US$16 for an hour of artificial daylight at a trendy cafe.
SAD affects millions around the world, including the United States. Serious forms of the disorder can lead to serious symptoms, but most are believed to get by with little or treatment.
Do you feel down or experience depressive moods in winter? Got any tips on combating the winter blues?
