I have been visiting The Sandbox on and off for a couple years. It's pretty hard to stop reading, once you start.

I haven't checked in to The Sandbox for a while, but on your mention I clicked in to find in the 2nd post that Colby Buzzell was going back over.  He's one of the most talented writers that can capture the visceral essence of modern war that I've ever read.  Did you ever read his book My War?  I wasn't much interested in anything when I got back, Cass had his blog printed out and bound before it was edited and pulled, but still bought the book when it came out.  I took it along on a trip a few months ago and was impressed.  I recommend it if you want a taste of Mosul and the early offensive from a regular guy who spoke his mind during a really screwed up time in the war.  He's a good man, I wish him well, I hope he understands some day that we all have to go back sometimes and do things we don't want to do.  I think he does.

Thanks for mentioning that link.

No, I have not read that book, but I will check it out on your recommendation. Sounds like powerful stuff.

I've not read any book-length accounts of the combat soldier's experience in Iraq or Afghanistan, though I have two in the wings. I ordered Marcus Luttrell's book, Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10, after reading an account of that in the Washington Post. My former publishing partner is putting out a book this fall that I will reserve on his recommendation, Once a Marine, An Iraq War Tank Commander's Inspirational Memoir of Combat, Courage, and Recovery.

Thanks for the tip on Buzzell's book.

It is, his command had an entire herd of cows over what he wrote in his blog, as I read it I remember thinking, oh, he shouldn't have writtent THAT, but a good portion of it ended up in the book.  He's a rather troubled soul I think, but seems to be getting straightened out.  It doesn't surprise me in the least that he's been called back.  A friend of mine was sure to stay in 8 years plus 8 extra days just so there was no confusion, and he wouldn't be getting that special letter.  I know another guy who did the same thing.  That and not being "special" will keep you off the radar.  I think the book is available at Amazon.

I met him when he was here to sign the book, very nice guy, and a moving book.  You might also like Brad Kasal's book, My Men are My Heroes.  He should have gotten a MoH for what he did, but got the Navy Cross, nothing to sneeze at either.

It's real, that's for sure.  It's been sanitized of course, but put his stuff with Mike Yon's analysis and viewpoint from a pro together, and you could wrap a lot of the early war up.  The second half is a completely different war though, so be careful not to judge it on the 03-05 era.

>I ordered Marcus Luttrell's book, Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10,

That was a truly harsh mission, but not so different from what most Spec missions are about.  It's most notable that a SEAL actually survived, so they can't claim the 'no lone survivor' creed anymore.  But Marcus is to be respected, and it's a good insight into the complicated culture of the federated territories.  Murphy was a true hero and so is Luttrell.  Once a Marine is probably going to be good, a different view, more cocky and with the element of his fight for VA care, which is an ongoing problem, and forever will be as soldiers are sent to the back of the line.  I opted out of it myself.
