Is Immigration Reform Dead?

Despite last-minute efforts by its supporters, the Senate trashed what might well be the last chance to pass an immigration reform bill, not just for this year, but until after the November, 2008 elections.  Do you think immigration could be the "wild card" in the 2008 elections?

It was a "bipartisan" effort in one sense, but critics complained that it was only a handful of leaders on both sides of the aisle who had agreed upon the "compromises" in the immigration bill which failed late Thursday.

Perhaps ironically, the "compromise" immigration bill was supported by a coalition consisting mostly of Democrats but led by Republican President George W. Bush.

That miffed many Republicans, as well as critics of the immigration bill who scoffed that it was yet another "amnesty," albeit one with more "bells and whistles."

Of Senate Republicans, perhaps the only name likely to be familiar to a majority of American voters is that of a candidate for the GOP presidential nomination, Arizona Senator John McCain.

Supporters of the bill claimed it was the last, best chance for immigration reform in the current Congress, and urged Members of Congress to put aside not only partisan differences but also regional and other interests.

However, opponents of the bill insisted it was "just another amnesty" for millions of undocumented immigrants -- whom detractors described using much less favorable words. 

Ordinarily, you might assume that a measure backed by most Democrats and supported by President Bush might find easy sailing through legislative hurdles.  But immigration is now a cross-party divider; and anything containing the word "amnesty" or providing for the legalization of millions of undocumented immigrants now heats up even the coldest political waters.

Do you think this means that immigration and the millions of undocumented workers in the United States are likely to be a major factor in the 2008 elections?  What do you think should be done?

I deliver food to the poor once a month. This am I deliver
to a Mexican family who are citizens having been born here many
years ago. They trace their family from the 1850's, A fence
has been olaced around their house and lot-I asked a son Why?
He said too damn many mexican criminals roaming around-they
should be arrested and deported, and the army patrolling the
border> His opinion-just politicians trying to get all the votes
so they can steal more from taxpayers. He works full time-the
free food stuff is for an old relative.

I am glad this BILL was KILLED. AND YES IT COULD VERY WELL BE A MAJOR FACTOR IN 08 elections. What should be done is RESPECT and do what our constitution says about securing our borders. That would be just a start and the other I WILL NOT SAY ON THIS FORUM. But I will say this I do not trust our POLITICAL HEADS in finding away around this deal. And also I think this deal is not over yet.

I'm reminded of the Biblical admonition that "that which you do unto these, the least of my children, you do unto me...."

He works full time-the free food stuff is for an old relative.

And does it occur to anyone else as odd that any of us should ever cease working full time -- as long as we're able to do so?  <smile>

Thanks for your comments; but, in our Congress, old bills never die.  They just await an incautious moment to be resurrected, like some creature from an early 20th century horror movie. <smile>

I'm sure you've heard, by now, that Congress is already in the process of resurrecting this one.

Do you think we can get some modern equivalent of Béla Lugosi or Boris Karloff to play the roles of the Congressional critters in this one?

Or do you think that Night of the Living Dead was intneded to describe Congress anyway? <smile>

The Elections. They can't break it into separate bills, Borders Control, Guest Worker Program, and enforcement
of illegals laws[ employers, in country illegals]

Remember the last election it was we need input, Lots of
studies to come up with the answer. Same Game  different election. It Citizenship or nothing for Congress!

I dread the thought of all the debates on it.

Evening John,

Your statement anything,amnesty" or providing for the legalization of millions of undocumented immigrants.

Immigration, is the way America became the greatest Nation, and most extraordinary country that was ever conceived, as for , as developing a fair system of Government, that allowed common men to have some input into their destiny and their famlies.

And immigration, should be a number one priority consent by all the citizens of this great nation of immigrant's.
We came from all over this globe, to become citizens of a Nation that had one it's right to become a Nation from men who did not agree that common men, should have the same right's that they granted themselves by the power of the sword or gun.

A Republic was created, by men of courage, as well as common sense and respect for their fellow man's right's to justice, and a fair and honest opportunity to live their life's according to the dictates of their own conscience, under the rule of Laws that would apply to all men and level the playing field to a degree.

They fought one of the most powerful military force's of the world and freed themselves of the chains and shackles of men, who considered them lesser men than them selves, and not worthy of the rights and freedoms they granted themselves, but there in is where they did err, as Providence has quite openly displayed it's willingness
to allow, all men to govern them self's, by righteous and honest rules of conduct and character, of creature's with a destiny, to one day meet and stand in the presence of the Author and Creator and giver of life, and give and account for their lives and the way they conducted them.

None, had chains on when they entered this realm, so to chain men whom the Creator felt should have the opportunity to live with out physical chains,and spiritual chains, is not a right given to men.
They can and do created covenants are governments, tribes, clans, and organizations that agree to work together for the interest of the parties involved.

They have rules and orders of conduct which they must abide by, if they want to be a member of that organization and be of service to one another, and their society that they have formed.

Will try to say what i mean much simpler.
Immigration per se, is not the problem going on in America, immigrants are appreciated and welcome.
The real problem facing America is the hiding of the real fact, by the media and state and federal governments, the corporate government and the one's they have bought political office for with fiat money, of why we would allow millions and millions of immigrant's from other countries, thirty to forty million Mexican immigrants, some where in the same range for the Islamic or Muslim immigrants thirty to forty million.
Allow them to come in to America, and subvert the American Constitution and Bill of Rights, and the Laws that all legal American citizens, have agreed to live by.

The President of Australia, name skips my mind, said to all immigrants you are welcome and will be treated with the same rights and privilege's as all other Australian citizens, but we do have requirements and codes of conduct and laws which if you want to be a citizen you must agree to, they will and are legal and binding on all who are citizens of this Nation.
If you feel you can agree to our Constitution and laws we welcome you and will treat you and greet you with open arm's.
But if you come to upset the tranquility of are stuggling Nation, and want to change it to your, type of government and culture, we would, have you to be well advised, we didn't force you are ask you to come, and if you can not live and respect our ways and Laws that the citizens of this Nation have agreed to live and abide by,we suggest that you may be more contented somewhere else.

Are government did not come easy it took serious and decades of hard work and the labor of many honest men to create a reasonably fair form of government, and with many supreme sacrifice's made in order to let others know we have united in the as a Free people to protect the Liberty we have won by the conviction that we where and are people who know and understand the Right and Freedom to live our life's as people with in the bound's of Law and Libety and Freedom, which we agree is the right of all men.

Millions of immigrants should never be allowed to, come in and destroy a Nations way of life and dealing with one another, because it is in their own interest, or the interest of unscrupulous corporations are corporate political organizations, who for personal gain would disrupt the tranquility and peace of a Nation of people for personal gain.

Shame, Shame and Shame on such covert disloyalty to a Nation of people, who have made such heroic and great sacrifice's to create a haven of peace for commonmen who Love Peace, but love the Liberty and Freedom that they deem, more important than Life it self.

I guess the Australian President said it a little different, but it strikes this kind of cord or response in my own spirit.

The Constitution covers problems of this nature, when those in government refuse to do what they took and office to do.

That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. — Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government..."

It is time to "throw off" the corrupt government and restore America's Constitutional REPUBLIC

My thoughts and sentiments, opinion, and viewpoint and position, would appreciate hearing your view and opinions and ideals on this subject.

As to the best of my understanding, there are as many as three thousand, unqualified Mexicans being given citizenship a month here in Arizona, it was on one of the public media programs here sorry i did not record it for the benefit of those who may doubt this statement.

I am not sure if the measure on immigration was lost in the ivory towers, of the corporate controled White House are if the laws are just being ignored by the Washington Gang.

Securing our borders? Constitution? Sure...I guess you haven't read it!

So here it goes:

Article IV, Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution

"The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against invasion."


Illegals from Mexico are entering the country and presenting a burden to numerous states. Such an invasion is clearly a problem. Unfortunately, politicians pander to special interest groups and permit illegal entry into the US, while ignoring the Constitution and its content.
Illegals are just that...ILLEGALS.

Whether the invader is a cousin, brother, or a friend from back home...it doesn't matter. They are illegals. We either advocate respecting the immigration laws ...or not. It's just that simple. Those wanting to let a cousin or buddy from mexico slip past the law are clear in their viewpoint. They do not respect this nation, our laws, or the people who are legally trying to become legal citizens.
