Years ago, Netscape held a competition to  choose a new throbber design.  Well, a number of us what the Splash Screen brought back so I thought i'd get the ball rolling.

I did a very quick one to use with the Splash extension, though it was a bit of a bodge job and some might say too boring. Bit too bland to use professionally, however.

Really nice, submitted both to staff, who knows.

But the second one needs to edit out "Corporation". Just Netscape Communications now.

Jay, you may need to get someone to edit the footer of these forums then, as it states '© 2005 Netscape Communications Corp. All rights reserved' :-D

I too would love to see a splash screen make a return, but I think the original arguement for why the splash screen had to go was there was no longer any loading time for the browser, it just popped up on screen.  Programs like MS Office & OpenOffice.org still require them as it notifies the user that it is currently doing something.

Love the designs though, my favourite would have to be the ships wheel one.  So retro, reminds me of NN 2 splash screen.

Just thought I would add that there is an addon that you can get from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2995 to add a splash screen to your netscape experience.  Just download one of the screens above and use it with this addon for a retro Netscape feel.

It's a Compuserve maintained forum but I'll pass it along re: "Corporation" :-)

Already using the splash extension ...

And BTW, if your font size gets a little smaller it will be lost in oblivion ... :-)

The splash screen disappeared starting with NS 8 which sourced from Firefox and FF didn't have one. Perhaps it will return by default, who knows. :-)

Edit: Where are you seeing the "Netscape Communications Corporation" as I don't see it here ??

Well that will explain why the e-mail responses to your comments come from community.compuserve.com instead of community.netscape.com. ;-)

As for the font thing, I honestly don't know what happened.  When I typed it, it appeared normal, but when I posted it, the font changed.  It was weird.

Email responses? I don't send any comments via email. Interesting .. I guess. O .... You're getting reply notifications by email .. ok, understood. :-)

I'll pass that along anyways ... thanks.

I hope Netscape does consider re-implementing a splash screen.
The wheel one is really nice; a lot of nostalgia there too! :-)

As I say, mine's just a duff one that I put together for the Firefox Splash extension. If anyone wants a go at doing anything to it, I've attatched the Macromedia Fireworks editable PNG below. I prefer things simpler I know, but mine's too bland.

The splash only lasts a few seconds, bland is no problem and in fact somewhat more desirable IMHO. :-)

Okay, here's something a bit more simplistic.

Based on the Netstripe Theme.

Okay, here are a series of Splash Designs based on the Netscape Comet concept.

See ALL of them here.

I like the last image the most as well, but I feel that the Netscape logo and writing should have the '3D' effect used. The logo at the top of the forum screen is an example. The new logo is too 'flat'.

Are you saying that the design of the logo is not cast in stone?

I too prefer the NS8 glassy logo, but I used the new  one cuzz I thought it was cast in stone.

Okay, here is a Comet Splash Screen with the glassy logo and a more 3D effect on the text.

NB: You can still see ALL of them HERE.
NB: To the person that likes my Avatar. I plan to release a gallery of Netscape avatars for members of this forum.
