Obama's web site was showing their plans to take away your guns.  Included was a provision to make a permanent "assault weapons" ban.  However, the site was flooded with negative comments, so they took this part down!

However, once n the internet, always on the internet, so someone archived the taken-down site HERE.  Check it out.  Scroll down to the CRIME AND LAW ENFORCEMENT rea.

His plans on Iraq and Afghanistan disappeared today.  Seems they don't like negative comments.  Poor things.  They're in for it.

Look for ammo to be restricted come January.

The whole site has been boiled down to this...

The Agenda

President-Elect Obama and Vice President-Elect Biden have developed innovative approaches to challenge the status quo in Washington and to bring about the kind of change America needs.

The Obama Administration has a comprehensive and detailed agenda to carry out its policies. The principal priorities of the Obama Administration include: a plan to revive the economy, to fix our health care, education, and social security systems, to define a clear path to energy independence, to end the war in Iraq responsibly and finish our mission in Afghanistan, and to work with our allies to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, among many other domestic and foreign policy objectives.

Not much there left to discuss...

Of course, if you don't promise anything then you can't be held accountable for your non-promises...<VBG>

I have never owned a firearm. The last time I fired a weapon was annual M-16 qualification at Ton Son Nhut in 1970.  Well, I did fire one round with a shotgun on New Years eve about 20 years ago at a friend's farm.  And I was plinking around with 22's on a friend's farm before I was old enough to drive.

But I am now ready to own some weapons.  A rifle, a shotgun, and a handgun.  Guess I will have to check the laws here in CA and start shopping.

You better get going, I think your laws are a lot more stringent than ours, and it looks like a real legal battle is coming nationwide.  Guns are flying off the shelves here.

>> A rifle, a shotgun, and a handgun<<

There's an all purpose collection...

CA laws have changed somewhat since I was resident there... my Mini-14 and M1-A are on their hit list from what I've heard... I've never bothered checking...

Mostly though it's just a matter of going to the store, providing a state license, passing the background check and coming back in two weeks to pick up your firearm...

ALL sales/transfers have to be coordinated through a licensed gun dealer... including private transfers...  that was news to me...

I'm attaching a recent (Feb 07) summary of CA's regs...

>>I have never owned a firearm<<

Sounds like you've got a good grounding...

With that combination I'd suggest you'd have a even better selection if you were to match the pistol and a lever action rifle in the same caliber...  These pistol calibers are all accurate in a rifle to about 150 yards... with a little drop at that range...

Don't tell the CA AG, but lever guns can be fired very accurately and quickly... even if the basic design is considered dated...

One very nice thing is that no one even blinks about a lever action rifle...

My Marlin 336 holds a half dozen rounds in .35 Rem and each one carried about 2,000 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle...  A pistol caliber allows nearly twice the rounds and can still be reloaded between shots... the loading gate works any time the bolt is forward...

.357 Mag, .44 Mag, .45 Colt are all available in both revolver and lever guns...  I favor .357 simply because smaller 'carry guns' are made in that caliber... or you can get an 8 shot cylinder on a large frame...

Concealed carry in CA, OTOH, is dependent on knowing the Chief of Police or County Sheriff.. they issue CCW papers to whom they will... no state requirement for them to have a reason pro or con...  If you are blessed enough to be in that special group a different handun would be advisable...

With one shotgun a 12 gauge is the standard... with dozens of loads available at reasonable prices (compared to 16, 20, 28 and .410 bores... all more expensive than 12 gauge fodder...)  I keep a few boxes of target loads with the skeet thrower, and the "house gun" is loaded up with #4 Buckshot... about 18-20 .25 caliber balls in each hull...

Recommended accessories are "Ghost Ring" sights on the long guns, carry slings, and a nice set of tritium night sights on the handgun...

The ghost ring  type sight is an oversized rear aperture that lets you acquire the sights almost instantly and still aim accurately... it's not really that common an accessory on a bird shooter's shotgun.. but it works VERY well with a "slug" barrel as used by deer hunters...  The eye instinctively centers itself in the large ring giving you a lot better sight picture than the "buck horn" "V" sight usually provided by the factory...

None of the above requires batteries, and nothing there would suffer from being stuffed in a $10 silicon "gun sock" and tucked into a dark corner for years<VBG>  Getting all of them in stainless steel wouldn't be a bad idea though...you can always apply cammo tape if they are too bright...

The tritium will be slightly dimmer in a decade... but it will still be bright enough to see for a long time to come...<g>  My ten year old Swiss Army watch still wakes me up if I roll over and it gets too close to my eyelid... and it's tritum illumination is a little over ten years old...

An odd though just struck me... that even a smaller pair of the old Cerwin Vega tower speakers could hold all of the above and several hundred rounds of ammunition easily... might muffle the base a little though<VBG>

I don't know the laws in CA, I know they're tough though.  If you can, go simple and easy, a hunting rifle, big bore, and simple Winchester Defender shotgun (12 ga) is good, and if you can handle it go for a .45 Sig, S/W or if you can afford it, an HK.  Depends on your hand strength but that's the important one, go for quality.  Otherwise drop down to a 9mm and get soft tip ammo- it spreads and kills, doesn't go through.  Dry fire the handgun in the store, if they'll let you, it won't hurt a good one.

Does CA allow a laser sight?  Check the batteries every 3-4 months.  One they're sighted in and aligned, you can't miss.  Tritium is good as a backup, but requires more skill and practice.  If you don't shoot a lot, go for a laser.

Put a short shelf above the most convenient closet door, no one looks up, and painted to match, or painted dark, no one will see it.  Another trick is to put a fake light switch in the wall that flips down or out and stash the handgun in it.

That always makes for a handy spot to keep things that might be needed quickly...

Some of my shooters are under feet tall though... and getting something to climb up while a fox was in the hen house would be a complication....

We'll probably move things up higher as their reach improves...<VBG>

Hello Mase:

You probably don't want to hear from me again, but I am back. First off I am in support of our right to bare arms. I disagree with the policy of waiting for 30 days while a background check is performed. Especially since you can go to any street corner in most urban areas and obtain any weapon of choice instantly. Second, I am curious of why Republicans are so interested in the keeping of assault rifles? Third, Is there any possibility of doing as Sen. McCain has asked and try to unite as one nation behind the president elect? I am not Republican, but when Pres. Bush was voted in by the people, I tried to be supportive as he was the People's choice-although I didn't agree with all his policies.

First off I am in support of our right to bare arms.

Right on. The right to bare arms is an American essential, especially as it applies to attractive young women.

Second, I am curious of why Republicans are so interested in the keeping of assault rifles?

Do you know what type of weapon is pejoratively, and wrongly, called an "assault" rifle? One that doesn't require a time-consuming single-shot reloading while your attacker is happily firing away with a semi-automatic piece. Republicans apparently understand that weapons kept for self-defense need to be effective.

What's the difference between a semi-auto "assault weapon" and a semi auto hunting rifle?  The name.  A pool cube at 200 yards is just as deadly as either of the above.  They all kill people and animals. So what's the real problem?  People are scared of the military, and assault rifles are associated with them.  It's sheer hypocrisy and ignorance.

HER I can spot driving when it looks like the oncoming SUV is driving itself...<g>

Her husband is a 6'3" 250 pound ex-California Highway Patrol officer...  so even the girls in the family are nearly six footers.... 7 kids<G>

OTOH, when half my available tame are shooters are under 5 feet though, I needed to come up with spots accessible to all...

Isn't that the way it always goes... seems like just ten years ago the little one was small enough to hold in my cupped hands...<VBG>

The big guy just completed the final two requirements and was awarded his Tenderfoot, Second Class AND First Class Scout ranks this weekend... He'd had a busy summer, and worked so fast the troop wasn't able to keep up with awarding him the intermediate ranks...<VBG>

He's been a Patrol Leader for a couple of months so the kids in his Patrol must have thought well of his leadership skills... now he's got the rank to go with the job as well<g>
