Oprah Winfrey, Tom Cruise, Tiger Woods, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are cited in the latest Forbes' 'Celebrity 100' list as being amongst the top-earning celebs, some of whom made $100M+ dollars over the past year.  Find out more.

Julia Roberts recently topped a Forbes' highest-paid actress list at $20 million per film, but Reese Witherspoon will reportedly become the highest-paid actress with a payday set at approximately $29 million for her next film.

Rock stars earn hundreds of millions of dollars from concert tours and the like, while top-tier TV stars are earning well in excess of $1M per episode.

Do you think that these celebrities deserve to receive their current asking prices?  Have entertainers' 'salaries' become excessive in general?

It's not just movie stars.  CEO's and sports stars are also highly overpaid.  The wealthy in this country get richer while the working class struggles.

"sports stars are also highly overpaid"

Major League Baseball salaries are unbelieveable. Billy Wagner just signed with the Mets for $43 million over four seasons. And he's not even a starter! The Mets are paying Hikeki Matsui $52 million for four years. Insane.

I can understand movie star salaries. When a movie star can deliver a $200 million gross not counting auxiliaries, it makes financial sense to pay a $20 million salary.

It's more than unbelievable -- it's obscene!  I am a big baseball fan yet I have started feeling guilty about going to see major league games.  I really hate being part of this mess.

If Julia Roberts is paid 20 million for a movie it is because her movies domestically and internationally make many multiples of that.

Julia Roberts does not magically or Satanically determine what her per picture income is.

Interesting about her...she's no great beauty, she's not a "hottie", she's not 24. She's has a real girl next door, accessible quality about her..and I think that says something about how the views of women have changed.

I think that movie stars (most) are paid too much.  But on the other hand, If I could find someone to pay me ridiculous sums of money for a service, I would be a fool to turn it down.

Along those lines, my sister had to take a pay cut from American Airlines a few years back only to find out that the CEO and his cronies got a big pay raise.  She earns...maybe $50,000 a year as flight crew while the big executives earned in the 50 to 60 million range.  Do the math...do you honestly believe that work that much harder than she does.

I think it's a sad state of affairs when celebirites earn that much while school teachers earn barely enough to live on.  Yes, you can say that they generate that much money in box office successes or in ballpark revenue, but you can also say that teachers (or anyone else for that matter) is able to provide a great service yet they can barely get by.

I think this country is in bad need of a change.

Hi Devra,

Call me a radical, but I seriously feel that CEOs and other executive management types are raping their corporations.  They get their board of director buddies to vote for obscene pay raises and the workers of the country and taxpayers of the nation are paying the price for these orgies of money.  People should be outraged, but the Republicans and Christian right have convinced them that gay marriage poses a greater threat than these crooks.

I'll call you a radical any day <s>!

I agree with you regarding CEO pay.  Even when companies are losing money for their investors the CEOs still earn outrageous salaries.  Shouldn't they be penalized?

When my husband worked for the corporate offices of a small retailer, the stock price dropped so miserably that the shares were not worth the price of toilet paper (not even the really cheap kind that comes in big packages).  However, the CEO (who I actually really like...but anyway)was asked to leave the company and he was given a balloon payment of somewhere around 10 million.  We, on the other hand, lost tens of thousands of dollars on paper.  I think at one point we were worth 2 million on paper and then we went down to a few thousand or so.

I do believe that the pay structure in this country is grossly unfair.  Now let's go do something about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can start by shopping at independent stores.  Avoid chains and formula businesses.  Money that is spent at locally owned businesses tends to stay in the community while money spent at large corporate stores is more apt to leave.  Also, your dollars are not being used to line the pockets of already wealthy CEOs.

Frankly, I was a little surprised when I heard that Julia was still the highest paid, and I believe still one of or the most powerful actresses in Hollywood.  Alot has happened since the first time she was named all that quite a LONG time ago.  I figured that gauntlet had been handed down to someone else by now.  I can't think of who, presisely I was thinking, I didn't think it was a  20something  actress  or anything.  Maybe Dakota Whats her name.  What is she, 8?  (And what's  the big sell on her anyway?  I saw her on Barbara Walters special and she's cute and all but.....)  Anyway, it seemed like Charlize Teron, Gweneth, Halle, to name but a few actresses that I thought at this point would be putting Julia to task and at least  tying her salary.

Here in Louisville there is a campaign called Keep Louisville Weird, which is a movement to do exactly that, buying from local vendors.  This is one of the few cities I've lived in here in the US where local businesses tend to do better than chains.  In Charlotte it was all chains.  If a small restaurant opened its doors, they would close again well within in year. In less than 3 years, I saw 4 restaurants open and close in the same spot only to be outsold by Chilis and the fast food places.

I think that it has something to with likeability. I call it the "would I have her over to dinner factor."

Would I have Gwyneth to dinner: Probabably not...she's on a very specialized diet I barely and she seems to be a little to artsy to be fun.

Would I have Dakota over: Well, aside from the fact that she's 12, and can't drink and has to go to bed by 8, I think not...she's very precocious, and such a goody too shoes, she seems kind of prissy.

Would I have Angelina over: Well, aside from the fact that she is frightening gorgeous, she's just too much into humanitarian ideals for me to feel that she'd like just a good dumb joke.

Now Julia...she'd kick back, have a beer, laugh so hard she snorted through her nose, but she'd also make a great girlfriend.
