and one you omitted...

.....Netscape 9 is based on Firefox 2.0 .....

In 2.0 the  'Go'  main menu entry was renamed to  'History'.....  (File  Edit  View  History  Bookmarks)

Now we've just got to wait to see many of the NS8 features will port easily & successfully onto a newer FF base......

fwiw,  It could be based on Firefox 3.0, but I'd wager it's a bit risky to develop on top of an Alpha release....

I didin't "omit" anything at all .... just didn't "include" anything else that will be forthcoming in the scheduled announcements.

Not necessarily. We do not know what the new team plans to port over. We can't assume it will be anything like 8.x.

One feature I really would like to see come back is the ability to see your passwords rather than the current ******.    Any hope to have that feature resurrected?

OK, a poor choice of language on my behalf....

.....I guess I should have phrased it as   'probably inadvertently revealed'   that NS9 is based on at least FF2.0.....

Agreed, but as developing & testing new code will take far longer than porting existing stuff, I would doubt there will be too much brand new code in the first release.....

.....Hence the inclusion of existing Firefox extensions (both the Sitemail and Firends Activity Status are already available for FF 1.5+)

The issue may well be whether the code is robust enough (including being supportable and fairly bug free) to port from the FF 1.0x base to FF 2.0....     providing Netscape don't have any rights issues with the Mecurial developed code........

Whatever, I hope it will be a bit more than FF 2.0 with a new theme and a few bundled extensions..........

why private release?.. i woulda thought a Public release woulda been  better, squash more Bugs or will the beta ( assuming there is going to be a Beta release ) going to the public?

There have been several Themes for 8.1 since it's release, see here for some details...

All work fine with 8.1.2

First of all you must be using NS 8.1 to access the various theme sites in order to download the themes AND install them. I don't quite understand why you think the page you were referred to is "useless". Try my UFAQ instead Theme Page

That's more than a bit disappointing to hear. I can understand wanting it to be private, but I would've thought NS 9 would be further along before teasing us with any sort of an announcement.

"Alpha" versions in a closed-source venue at Netscape have NEVER been "public". However, sometimes an actual "beta" has been mis-named "alpha".  The first public releases of Netscape 8 were "beta" releases. The NS 9 alpha will be tested in private by paid Netscape employees and as usually the case will go to beta within days. Exactly what the release plan for public testing is, I don't know at this time but I feel that NS 9 will go public rather quickly regardless of what it's called.

I remember Communicator 4.0a1 the first alpha that we Champs tested after the programming staff finished the source. I really don't think you want an "alpha". One of the bugs was it restarted the computer all by itself at random times, never knew when.

However, since NS 9, like NS 8, is sourced from a proven and stable release of Firefox, you won't have the problems and woes of alpha/beta versions. And besides that, the release time frame is very much shortened.

OK, obviously I must have the wrong end of the stick......

..... you complained about the lack of Themes for NS 8.1,   so I gave you a link to a list of the available Themes for NS 8.1.x  including screenshots, where to download/install them from, and how to contact the author for bug reports/help etc.....

....so, what sort of 'theme' were you refering to when you said:-

how long for new themes for 8.1

A musical theme.......or maybe a wild west theme....?
