Putty epoxies have been around for years, and I have used them with great success for projects they were suited to.

However, they definitely have a FINITE shelflife, they will self harden over time - so am sure if the 6 for $19.99 is going to be a good deal for many/most folks if you don't go thru a LOT of epoxy.  Check out the other epoxy putty offerings at the local boat/marine store, auto store, etc - I really want to say that the size of the Mighty Putty package is sorta small compared to the ones you can find in the boat/marine/etc stores - not sure about if the price is OK or not, BUT it may be OK price wise for 6, but definitely NOT a good buy when the special pricing quits

I keep a stick in my boat for emergency repairs - replace it every couple years and so far have NOT needed to use it, BUT the ability of these epoxy putties to cure underwater is a great feature if I every hit something and punch a hole in the hull (hopefully a small hole <vbg!!>

Also, around the house I really don't find that mixing up a 2part epoxy and adding filler material a hassle, I use enough epoxy that I buy the 2 part liquid in quart size cans (for the resin - the hardner is in a smaller size container) and the shelf life is MUCH better.  I like the West Marine System epoxies that I buy at the local marine store.  With filler it can be made to be a thick 'putty' like material - with the right hardner it sets up fairly quickly and I can definitely get tech support from the maker if I have a strange application I want to use it with

John, so this stuff is just repackaged to sell on TV?  I don't need 6 packages, but maybe I could find a couple people to share with.

Thanks,

I am sure that the company that actually makes it is packaging it however the TV folks want them to <vbg!!>

West Marine sells a expoxy stick - 2oz for $16.99 - appears to be (and as I recall) about 10in long stick of the stuff.

It might be worth a little extra to have smaller packages.  From what you said, if I just needed a little, the rest of the package would go to waste.

I bought a double-ended tube of epoxy putty from the MicroMark catalog a year or so ago and it's worked quite well.  I don't have many occasions to use it (mostly for mending ceramics, which are tough to fix with other glues).  It hasn't hardened in the tube yet.  :)

Great source of tools and supplies for hobbies, model making, jewelry, etc etc etc (and they always have a huge sale that starts in June and ends in September).

It really depends on what you want to do with it. For cosmetic filling of wood or drywall, use a standard acrylic putty such as DAP from the hardware or home store. It is cheap, does not have to be mixed, washes up with water, sands and paints easily and is not significantly toxic.

For filling of metal or fiberglass surfaces, use "Bondo" which you can get at any auto store and most hardware stores. This is what auto body shops use for filling dents.  It is stronger than the acrylic products but it is still a filler and not strong enough for structural repairs. Surfaces have to be clean and well roughed with coarse sandpaper.  It is a polyester resin product which is not particularly dangerous but you should wear rubber gloves and work in a well-ventilated area.  It is a soft paste which is mixed with a small amount of liquid hardener.  There is a good chance that this is what is being sold on TV.  It is much more expensive than acrylic fillers and a much bigger mess to use.  There is no point to using it on woodwork although it works perfectly well.

For quick and dirty structural repairs, there is an epoxy-based putty product called "Marine Tex" which you can get at boat stores such as West Marine. It is incredibly tough and very forgiving of the surfaces you apply it to so long as they are free of loose dirt.  It even sticks to wet or oily surfaces although I am sure it is better to have them clean.  It is very hard and rigid when cured which is not always what you want.  It is also a lot of work to sand smooth, even with a power sander.  It is a repair product, not a finish filler. I have used it to do emergency repairs on my boat which I intended to do right when I got home and some of those are still in place after 10 years!

Epoxy resin is toxic!! Like cyanoacrylate "Super Glue", it is the kind of thing you can use for years without a problem and one day it will bite you without warning.  It does not seem to produce the life-threatening allergic reactions which "Super Glue" does but it sure can mess you up and it can take a year to get completely over it.  Never let a drop of this stuff get on you!  I speak from experience here.

There's a type of Bondo that has chopped fiberglass strands in it. Works like Bondo but it will harden like fiberglass.

When I installed the refrigeration system in my old sailboat I used it to make some gussets to secure the shelf where the compresor stood. Since I wanted it to conform to the hull sides, making wood gussets would have been quite time consuming, with making templates, fitting, etc.

The local "boat *******" (aka Boat Maintenance Worker <g>) suggested that I hold the shelf with a temporary support, shape the "bondo" gussets by hand (with gloves, of course) and apply them. It worked for the 12 years I had the boat and I suspect that it's probably still holding today.

I had not seen that product.  I will look for it since I have to stay away from epoxy now.

I found it at the local chandlery but I have seen it at West Marine too. Come to think of it, I recall seeing it at a auto paint store too.

I actually bought and used Mighty Putty. It worked great.
My dishwasher was mounted under my cabinet and kept coming
loose in my new kitchen. I guess the weight of the dishwahser full
kept pulling loose the anchors. My contractor tried fixing it 2X, but
the small anchors in the granite top kept coming loose. I got
the mighty putty, kneaded it and used it to anchor it to the counter top.
It works great, easy and holds on tight like on TV. I highly recommend it. Steve http://www.harpercollins.com/authors/18530/Steven_A_Silbiger/index.aspx

did puttied together a project with buttons. Stuck right together.
The other thing I used Mighty Putty for is filling in a crack in concrete.Steve http://www.harpercollins.com/authors/18530/Steven_A_Silbiger/index.aspx

If this is a two-part stick which you knead together to mix, it is probably epoxy resin and dangerously toxic! Read the label carefully.  Epoxy, cyanoacrylate (Super Glue) and polyurethane compounds are not for children!  When you work with these compounds, you need to wear rubber gloves, work in a well ventilated area and avoid getting any speck of the materials on you.  They are all "sensitizers", which means that you can come into contact with them repeatedly without ill effect and then have a life-threatening reaction the next time.

I have a friend who almost died from a reaction to "Super Glue" and I was sick for a year as a result of being careless with epoxy resin.

Someone should tell Billy Mays that he should use his "indoor" voice on those commercials.

Actually, the only reason I would consider buying Mighty Putty would be if I could knead a couple of tubes together and epoxy Billy's top & bottom teeth together, permanently shutting his cake hole.

As a voiceover professional it really annoys me that a screaming hack like Mays is taking business away from my brethren in the business who are far better at what they do (and in the process increasing the ratio of crappy commercials to acceptible ones).  Therefore, I will never buy any product promoted by Mays (or Donald Trump, for that matter) no matter how good I think it might be.

Besides, I'm pretty sure you can find an equivalent (or better) brand of epoxy putty at Lowes or Home Depot that you don't have to buy in quantities of 6 or pay shipping and handling to receive.

Sold the product internationally under another name. This is a private label product and does work well. However, the product is not a one product fixes all. It does do the things shown but it should be remembered that the product is being shown under ideal conditions.
