Below is a letter taken from Dear Abby today:

DEAR ABBY: I am a white female with many African-American friends, and yes, I did vote for Obama. When Obama became president, most of my black friends said: "Finally! We have a black man as president. All this racism will stop. The white man is no longer in charge of things."

To me, it was like it didn't matter that his mother was white, he was raised by his grandmother who was white, and he is half-white. What I'm trying to say is, he's a man of equal parts -- not all black. So why do African-Americans make it sound like he is of all black heritage? Isn't he of white heritage also? A lot of my white friends feel the same way I do. -- NANCY G. IN CLEVELAND

Any thoughts?

Hb,

It is still amazing how words of very few African American people speaks for all. The author of that letter to Dear Abby needs enlightenment as much as her many African American friends. Example: there is not one African American in this country who can trace their lineage too the civil war period that can claim to be of complete African lineage.

Proverbs 10:9

i think it goes back to that one drop of blood makes you black in this country. Many Blacks would pass when they got a chance but if found out could lose the job because of being"black".altho looking white i.e. Walter White.Mr. White passed as white to cover lynchings, etc then used the evidence for the NAACP.

So its a habit thinking of Obama as a black man only.

Coming on a month late on this:  I would, as a white woman, like to put in my two cents worth:

I never thought that African Americans made it sound as if he was of all "black" heritage.   I thought that the whole point was something else:  That if he looked black to others, he was black to most Americans, functionally speaking, and had been treated in our society as belonging to the "black race", and therefore he had always experienced American life as a black person, i.e. with built in bias and such all his life.

You get it. You really get it. IMHO, that Dear Abby letter is a way for that individual do deal with their own societal biases that is a part of our American heritage. Not a good part of it, just something that some are comfortable with and others are truly trying to rid themselves of.

Thanks enormously for your feedback.  Whether I get something right or wrong, I am truly dependent upon the feedback, education, information, etc. from black folk as I try to find out, understand, what you have known since babyhood and beyond.  Especially since I am from the (hopefully) last generation in which true segregation and de facto existed in large part, I have a feeling of trepidation as I try to explain what are not even my own experiences or situations due to my non-black heritage.

From my point of view, I hope you understand, JAD, I want to pull my hair out when I read and hear things like that lady wrote to Dear Abby.  She truly has no idea of why race and color is, if not the biggest (it seems as if now other things are competing, like global warming and the economic crisis) issue in America, certainly on par with other issues!  I will take it further and that is to say: race not only of African heritage but also of Asian and Latino heritage, as this nation becomes more and more a nation of color and non-European heritage. This lady and so many others absolutely must catch up as they will pay the price for their total out-to-lunch lack of awareness of what is going on.

On a less poisonous level, I believe, less so but still toxic, that is how I think Sgt. Crowley, for all this "race awareness" classes he taught, also doesn't get it.  It really struck me how even in liberal Cambridge the police didn't get it.
