Where Have All The Birds Gone?

In the early 1900's, University of California Berkeley's Professor Joseph Grinnell surveyed bird territories in California's Sierra Nevada. Of the 53 bird species observed then, in 2009, 48 species are missing. Biologists blame the missing birds on climate change.

The birds are ranging farther north or at higher altitudes, where the temperatures or rainfall is more what they prefer.

Have you noticed a lack of birds in your area?

And it's not just little birds which are vanishing -- and which are being missed:

Kenya: India Faces Health Threats As Vultures Vanish

"In the early 1980s, vultures were a hazard in the aviation industry because they were frequently crashing into the aircraft. Now they are virtually extinct," comments Nikita Prakash, the technical assistant at the world's first vulture breeding conservation centre in Pinjore on the foothills of the Shivalik mountains, part of the lower range of the Himalayas....

To save a Mockingbird: Endangered bird that inspired Darwin may be rescued thanks to his 170-year-old specimens

Last updated at 4:23 PM on 19th November 2009

A rare mockingbird that inspired Charles Darwin to develop his theory of evolution, is to be saved from extinction with the help of some stuffed specimens collected by the famous naturalist.

Darwin noted that the mockingbirds on Floreana were slightly different from those living on the other Galapagos islands. He speculated that they could be modified descendants of a single ancestor.

To kill a Mockingbird: Three specimens collected by Charles Darwin (right) in the Galapagos. The one on the far left is the rare Floreana mockingbird....
