Dealing with an insurance company can be tricky. After all, they don't want to pay out money that they don't have to, and sometimes they don't want to pay out when they SHOULD.

Here's a list of things that you want to be careful of when filing any claim:

  • Don't begin your claim with, "I think" - If you're not sure, don't guess. What you say could cause your claim to be delayed or denied.
  • I got whiplash - It's such a favorite of fraudsters it's likely to get your claim flagged.
  • It's an experimental treatment - These are not typically eligible for coverage.
  • My basement flooded - Acts of nature are not covered under a standard homeowners policy. If your pipes burst, say so.
  • Just send me a check - If you imply that you're not going to use the money for the intended purpose, you may lose out altogether.

I've been lucky. In all the years I've had insurance policies, I've never had to put in a claim. A couple of times I had things that might have been covered under my homeowners policy, but they were less than the cost of my deductible, so no use even contacting my company.

Do you have any horror stories when you've had to deal with an insurance company?

A recent hail storm caused damage to my roof.  I first called a roofing company for their advice, opinion and price quote.  I then called my insurance for a adjuster.  I was gathering information and not sharing it. (G)

Information is power in negotiations.  My roofing company figured I was shopping for competitive prices and gave me a good bid.  My insurance company, I found out was a keeper and was fair.  Others in the neighborhood didn't fair so well with their insurance company.  (This is the time you find out how much you are really saving on insurance premiums.)  I also got a bid from a general contractor for some interior water damage.  All was fixed with little out of pocket money.

I again learned that treat people right and they'll treat you fairly.  The most important is my silence is golden.

    Bob

And good for you for knowing how to deal with the ins co, not everyone has that skill.

I got the bill for my mandatory flood ins yesterday. They have doubled my deductible <sigh> and since this is part of the national flood ins thingy, I don't think shopping around will do me any good. At least I don't live in a high risk area. Those deductibles went wayyyy up. Oh well, when our dilapidated levees around here break, at least I'll be covered.

    No, lol

That policy doesn't cover any contents or personal property, just the house. And I suppose it's very possible the levees around here could break. Reports say that ours are in way worse share than just about anywhere else in the country.

Ahhh, Bob...the Dutch didn't become a rich nation by giving their expertise away. But you can always strike a Dutch bargain!
