That kind of thermometer is useful in cooking, but not for roasts. I have three -
1. Infra-red contactless that I use for measuring fat, ovens, fridges, freezers, etc.
2. An electronic probe type that you can insert into the product - mainly important if you have to meet statutory food hygiene regulations
3. An electronic probe that is wired through the oven door-seal, to the monitor which you keep on the counter. This is for roasts.

Both Amazon and King Arthur have it - its a few dollars cheaper on Amazon

have to disagree with you. The Thermapan is wonderful for roasts and turkeys and everything else

Not many of us can have thermometers wired though an oven door!

Everyone can. These probes are wired with very thin stainless steel sheaved braid, and are designed to pass through the oven door seal without letting air in. Not suitable in a microvave, for sure, but any other oven. There are loads of them on the market - not expensive. Surely you have them in the USA?

I ordered one similar to the one you have but Thermopen from ThermoWorks for the very scientific reason that it came in yellow. Ha!

I don't have #1.

I just ordered #2. (Yippee)

My sister and each have a version of #3. I can't remember the brand of hers but mine is Taylor. That's the one we found a good guide to knowing when the roast is at about 100 degrees and then we're going to switch over to #2 for the end of the roasting.

#1, the infra-red contact-less thermometer is one of the most useful things you can have in the house. They are not expensive - I paid about £20, say $35? You can check your exact oven temp, fridge temp, freezer temp in seconds. Also very useful if the central heating breaks down to find out where the problem is - or the car, even. Are the wheel bearings too hot, etc. Once you have one, you will use it daily.

I havent a clue and quite frankly, am not interested! I do very well with an instant thermometer when needed

You really can use the Thermopan alone. The really neat thing about it that you just barely have to put the tip in and it registers almost instantly. Faster than the Taylor. Once, in a pinch, I even used it on a freezer to ck. temp.

I use mine only about twice a year. That, I hope, is the reason I almost screwed up completely by setting the alarm to the Fahrenheit temperature but failed to note that the device was set to the Celsius mode. Although I try to work in SI, I'm still used to thinking about food in foot/pound/quart/Fahrenheit system.

Making plastic things, like the sides of a digital thermometer, in various colors is easy, you just add different dyes in the molding process.

Metro (the company that bought the Canadian part of A&P) is slowly switching the herbs to their own brand. It will be interesting to see what other brands, if any, are available once the conversion is complete. They'll probably continue to have the cheaper McCormick line in tins.

Tins are very common here, although some spices do come in tins. At least I don't often see them, but perhaps I'm just not really looking.

I got my yellow Thermopen thermometer yesterday and used it already on a chicken breast (and my spaghetti squash although I have no idea what temp it's SUPPOSED to be; it was 199 degrees F).

I'm glad you mentioned this. As soon as I told my sister I ordered it, she ordered one too. Now we're wondering why we waited so long.
