Sauvignon and Slurpees? 7-Eleven launches in-house brand of wine

On Wednesday, Nov 4, 7-Eleven (SVNDY) released its first in-house brand. This market segment, which has generally been dominated by grocery store brands like Walmart's (WMT) "President's Choice" or Whole Foods' (WFMI) "365 Everyday Value" lines, tends to focus on simple foods with mass appeal foods. However, for its first offering, 7-Eleven decided to raise the bar: It's going for wine.

The chain's new line, Yosemite Roads, will open with two basic offerings: a "fresh and zesty" chardonnay "with notes of apricot, peach and honey," and a "full-bodied cabernet sauvignon with juicy plum overtones." The 750-milliliter bottles will retail for approximately $3.99 apiece, and will be available in most of the company's 15,000 convenience stores, as well as Denny's restaurants, Shell Garden grocery stores, and several retail outlets in Japan.

That's a nice price if the wine is any good.

I saw the reference to that. Unfortunately, there isn't a Trade Joe's anywhere around here and, as far as I can tell, none in the works.

I sure wish there was. I get quite envious listening to others talk about what they buy at TJs.

You have to travel a little. I know where TJ's are located in practically every west coast city. None here, either, but my pantry is loaded with TJ's stuff. Unfortunately I can't buy the frozen stuff, some of it was really good. I used to have a TJ's within a mile of me in the last life before this one.

Look on their website and there's an area where you can put in a request for one in your area. Aren't you visiting one when you go to visit your son?? I know where they all are in Seattle.

No, my son and dil went once and both declared they hated the place and would never return, so I assume they won't take me!

Worldwide there's a glut of inexpensive wine, so it makes sense for a retailer to offer an inexpensive house wine if it can be sold in enough of their stores.  Here in NY the restrictive alcoholic beverage laws probably forbid such a wine being sold in a convenience store; wine and beer licenses are separate things and are (I believe) seldom sold together at retail.  Which is why I've never been tempted to buy TJ's Two Buck Chuck.

Plus in this economy people are drinking more beer and less wine, which tends to lower the price of wine or at least offer a less expensive wine?

I really am not up on industry statistics, but I suspect that people who generally prefer wine still preferentially drink wine with meals, perhaps drinking less often or less in amount and buying more economical wine.

Personally I regard wine and beer as very different alcoholic beverages and not usually interchangeable.  There are those of course who are into the alcohol buzz, but for those folks I don't think wine was ever a consideration.  Even before the recent economic bust you didn't hear about people binging on a "six-pack" of a first-growth Bordeaux.

I'd insist next visit. Of course, it really depends on when you go, because at some times the crowds are just too much with the small stores and aisles. We went to one in Seattle on one visit that was by the university. We went on a Sunday late morning before heading home and it was jammed.

Since this will be at Christmas time, I''m sure it will be crowded. I guess it's worth asking, though.

The one near our house in Las Vegas wasn't crowded except on Saturdays and late afternoon on weekdays. I learned to avoid those times.

I'd hate to think of the backlash & fallout if one of my sons refused to take me to a place I wanted to visit.

Apparently you never heard of  Mad Dog (Mogan David 20/20 - 20% alcohol and $1.50 a bottle when I was a teen) or wine in a box. Or Bone's Farm or Annie Green Springs

Oh, I've heard of them, but I don't normally think of fortified products and "wine" in the same thought.  BTW, wine in a box can be plonk or even fairly decent stuff these days.
