Hello.  The term, "you better get onboard," in that example, is onboard one word?  That one confuses me!

Hello.

Webster's shows "onboard" and "on-board" as an adjective or an adverb.

American Heritage shows "on "onboard" and "on-board" as an adjective but "onboard" as an adverb.

Looks like you get to take your pick!

Webster's shows "onboard" and "on-board" as an adjective or an adverb.
For clarity, both Merriam-Webster's Unabridged Dictionary and Merriam-Webster Online show the word onboard as an adjective, not as an adverb, and neither support the hyphenated form on-board.  It's that Webster's New World (which has no connection to the Merriam-Webster organization) listing onboard and on-board as adjective or adverb.

For clarity, my friend, it simply doesn't matter. On this, as with so many other matters, the authorities do not agree, so we are free to follow wherever our preference leads us. Whether it's Merriam-Webster's Unabridged, Webster's New World, or Random House Webster's Unabridged, again, it is of no importance whatsoever.

Hey all,

I think I'm confused here, it's really not an adjective or an adverb in the example, is it?

I would think in that context it would be two words regardless of the conflicting sources. Wouldn't it be, "The boat had an on-board radar system, so I felt safe getting on board"?

Isn't that kind of like "When you went for your follow-up visit, what doctor did you follow up with?"
Unless I've been writing those wrong as well, which is very possible.

I understand exactly what you mean, Richard, and it was a response that shows you are someone who realizes not all Websters are created equal. Merriam-Webster is certainly the authority I turn to.  Can't just trust any so-called dictionary--and I try to steer clear of those that have the word "College" in the title or, God forbid, "New World."  Nope, I don't subscribe to anything's acceptable just so long as it's in print and calls itself a dictionary--but that's just me.  Make it Merriam.

I agree 100%, with the sole exception that where you say "Make it Merriam," I say, "Make it American Heritage."
