Deep within a new CNN article, there's striking news about the electoral landscape because change has arrived. According to the network's polling director, Keating Holland, the internals show that a majority of southerners, the last bastion of conservatism, think President Obama has done a better job than Bush:

Fifty-seven percent say Obama has been a better president than George W. Bush; only a third say Bush’s track record was better.

“Compared to Obama, Bush does fairly well among southerners and rural voters. But even in those categories, a majority still says Obama has done a better job than Bush,” says Holland.

Obama has generally polled lower among southerners than other regions of the country, and yet he still ranks higher than the former president.

One year after the landmark 2008 election, President Obama is making inroads across regional lines, and most Americans favor his performance as president.

Has the change you hoped for arrived? Do you agree with the majority of Americans?

How do you rate Barack Obama's performance as president?

My biggest disappointment is that the GOP has been totally unwilling to work with any Democrat to solve the serious problems that this country is facing. I am pleased with how President Obama is handling is office, and what he has achieved. There is no contest between Obama and Bush, Bush isn’t in the same league.

The WSJ pointed out the other day that while Obama is still working on Health Care Reform, many of his legislative priorities have been passed, like the tax cut for the Middle Class, the Hate Crime Bill, increasing mileage for cars, the stimulus package, and the list goes on and on. In his quiet way, he has gotten a lot done. Is he perfect, no, but after 9 months, the country is heading in the right direction.

What do you think most Americans are missing?   I see the preoccupation with jobs,  health care and war spending but I wonder if the average guy on Main Street is feeling the success or is it too incremental to register on his consciousness?

At this point in time,  I'm leaning toward a mixed review due to the fact Obama's been willing to continue some of the Bush policies regarding constitutional rights and the reach of the federal government.

I am not happy about that either, but generally, I am satisfied. I knew he wasn’t as liberal as some thought, but that is OK with me. I cracked up last night when I heard Rush call him radical. This man isn’t radical, but since he doesn’t bow down to Limbaugh, I guess that means he is..........

I think that right now the American People are uneasy. The Right Wing of the GOP has been yelling so loudly at the top of their lungs, that people are nervous and looking wondering if they are missing something. I think once we get health care passed, and the economy continues to pick up, people will calm down.

I'm comfortable the American people are uneasy and there are people like Alan Grayson stepping forward to challenge the politics as usual status quo.   I think it's going to get worse before it improves and I don't mind politics as a street fight.   It's got to be bare-knuckle brawling and if television is the medium where people get their information I'm all for people like Grayson using it to promote populism.

If the RWNs keep telling themselves they don't believe Obama is a "real American in his heart",   they're going to be consigned to the outer fringes of the process because their only offering empty rhetoric to Americans who're looking for solutions that improve their lives.

At this mark,  I think Obama has to be bolder.  Much bolder.

Acting boldly isn’t really his style. He is more of a behind the scenes person, but I think he needs to expect more from Congress.

I really don’t know what is going to happen to the GOP. My personal opinion is that they going to really split and go into a tail spin before recovering.

I agree with both you and Jim about Obama and boldness. When he came into office, he was faced with more very serious issues than just about any president I can think of. He's had to make quick decisions about which issues to tackle first, and just how far to go. In that, he's been bold. His style leaves many questioning why he isn't bolder, and with good reason: People feel they're in a position where time is of the essence, be it a soldier in Iraq or Afghanistan, or the single mother of a sick child without health insurance, or a homeowner facing foreclosure on top of a job loss.

I think he better adapt his style to an even bigger vision than settling for half-a-loaf rather than demanding more.   He can improve.

<<I really don’t know what is going to happen to the GOP. My personal opinion is that they going to really split and go into a tail spin before recovering. >>

I think they've been destroyed and what may emerge from the wreckage is an even more conservative, fractured group.

Boldness in goals is great, but I like the idea of a President learning the facts and possibilities of an issue before acting. He is demanding answers from the Generals before deciding what to do in Afganistan, and sending them back to figure out answers to questions they don’t have.

But, part of the problem is that the GOP in the Senate has decided to drag their feet on everything, something that the Democrats didn’t do when the GOP was in power. IF and when we get Healthcare done, then there is climate change. There, the GOP won’t even go to the Committee hearings. What kind of childish behavior is this?

You know, everyone is saying what he needs to do. I am watching and seeing him move in a lot of areas, like healthcare, where people have been nay saying since the beginning. Now, is what we are going to get exactly what I want, no, but it will be a definite improvement. The summer was rough, but I think that the GOP in the end, with their yelling and name calling, did themselves more harm than good. It was like we let the children have their temper tantrum and now everyone is going ahead as if they had never yelled.

The last bastion of conservatism is white, rural and over 50 living in the south and it's a remarkable to see Obama outpolls Bush within one year of his election.    I'm convinced the Republicans are going to go nuttier and more extreme.

The previous administration did so much damage that the country needs - and deserves - a president who doesn't just blast through problems, some of which have been in the making for decades. What we do now can make or break the country.

Obama inherited two wars, has been in office less than a year, and yet the Republicans all of sudden want both wars addressed and resolved. Where were they when Bush failed to follow through in Afghanistan? Where were they when he switched goals and invaded Iraq? Cheney says Obama is dithering, when we all know all too how he handled (sic) it.

Think and then act, unlike the GOP which wants him to act and then think. Of course, no matter what he decides, they won’t like it.

I think there's a portion of the country that'll willingly follow them over the hill and they'd be the first ones to raise up a Corn Pone Hitler-type as long as this person affirms their victimhood.   California is on the brink of economic disaster and remember that saying about California?   What are people going to do when the money runs out?   I think we're seeing hints of it and the Republicans have  no anxiety about stoking the fires of real unrest among their fringe.

<<I am afraid that before this is all over, there is going to be violence.>>

I think there's going to be violence because as people become more anxious about their futures they're going to gravitate toward "blaming" a specific group or individuals in government.   Anyone recall the American attitude toward the Japanese when they began making vast inroads into the U.S. car market share?    It went violent in Michigan and there's no reason to think it wouldn't happen again as people fall victim to foreclosures and job losses.

Commercial real estate is tanking,  manufacturing is drying up in many places and people are stuck in outposts,  in homes they can't afford,  without jobs and the good life they knew is no longer "normal."

We're seeing some people who'd never even seriously entertain criminal activity like robbery because they're desperate getting arrested.  It's couldn't be termed a crime wave,  it's just increasing in the 'burbs.

This is the problem the Democrats are having with the GOP Children in Congress. They are so far out of the mainstream and they are a bit nuts. Look at Michelle Bachman.
