Sometimes, in spite of the politics, one expects it’s Congressional Critters to act like the adults they are. This is one of the times I would expect adult behavior, but that isn’t the case. The GOP has delayed since the middle of September an extension of unemployment benefits only because they could. Finally, the Democrats sweetened the pie with a business tax cut the GOP had wanted and an extension of the Housing Tax Credit, another thing everyone wanted. But, now the GOP is still insisting that they debate a bill that most of them will end up voting for, for another 30 hours. Why you ask? Because they can? Or is there something else behind this? In the meantime, 185,000 American’s unemployment benefits have run out. The Party of No is hurting America. Here is the account of the mess from Huffington Post: In the world outside the Senate, time is money; inside it, time is everything. Senate Republicans are taking full advantage of that reality, using every parliamentary device at their disposal to slow down an extension of unemployment insurance benefits -- even after Democrats added billions for big business to sweeten the pot. The extension overwhelmingly passed the House 331-83 in late September. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) made a motion to pass it by unanimous consent in early October; it was blocked by GOP objections. After negotiations, Reid filed for cloture on Oct. 21 to break a GOP filibuster. On October 27, the Senate voted 87-13 on a motion to proceed to consider the bill, breaking the filibuster. But under Senate rules, the GOP is still allowed 30 hours of "debate."There actually isn't much debate, but the clock is ticking while senators take to the floor to make speeches about whatever they like. To get things moving, Democrats sweetened the pot, adding in billions in tax breaks for business -- a net operating loss carry-back provision that the GOP has long favored -- and an extension of the home-buyers tax credit. Reid introduced the goodies in a substitute amendment along with Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), a champion of the business tax break. "The two were put together as a means of greasing the skids. You know how things work around here," Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) told HuffPost. "Could we have gotten UI through otherwise? Yes, we could have, but it would have taken us several days. And we don't have that kind of time. And the minority is then able to, because of the time, demand certain things." The skids properly greased, Reid filed for cloture again on Oct. 29th. It came to a vote Monday night, Nov. 2nd, where it passed 85-2. Story continues below Still, the GOP fights, requesting that the 30 more hours of "debate" elapse. That'll take the Senate to late Tuesday night. If Reid invokes cloture again to proceed to the underlying bill, another 30 hours would take the Senate to Thursday morning at the earliest for -- at last -- a vote on the bill itself. Following such overwhelming votes, a measure usually passes the Senate by a quick voice vote. "The common practice is when you get cloture on motion to proceed, you quickly allow it to pass," says Jim Manley, senior communications adviser for Reid. "There are only so many ways to strengthen the economy that can get 60 votes and get enacted quickly -- these happen to be two of them," said Manley.  The objection came, Manley said, because Republicans were trying to introduce unrelated amendments attacking ACORN and the financial-industry bailout, among other things. Stewart countered that Democrats, having attached a hate-crimes measure to a defense-authorization bill, have little room to talk about unrelated amendments. He added that Republicans offered to withdraw several of the objectionable amendments.  In the meantime, according to a Senate Democratic ticker, more than 185,000 people have lost their unemployment benefits. (The party of no is hurtung America.)

Give them an inch and they take a mile. Watch with utter amazment in the next few weeks, as they appear to make some headway in a couple of state elections and think they have just won ww3. Now steps in unemployment benefits, watch how they now again piss off the American public. Tob, its just another case of brain dead conservative politics in action.   Its a never ending display of pure stupidity that shouldn't amaze any American. Business tax cuts that won't bring substantial job growth, its time now for congress and the senate to legislate some serious conditions with these business tax cuts that the Republicans are so adamently in love with. Like making American business accountable as to where the savings is really going. Detroit city is talking about enacting a rule to thar affect for businesses in the city recieving city tax cuts, I think congress needs to take the same into consideration.

"With days and days of floor time eaten up by a simple extension of unemployment benefits, chances dwindle that the Senate will be able to complete in time the appropriations bills that fund the government."

ROFL, it is a little late for the Republicans to be slowing things down as to make it impossible for the Senate to "complete in time the appropiations bills that fund the government".

You are not remotely suggesting that the Democratic congresscritters are acting like adults since most the appropriations bills for FY2010 are a MONTH overdue.

If the GOP insists on 30 hours of debate and then another and another and another, seems like it slows stuff down. Stuff they will end up voting for. This is childish, you should know.

<<Nope, just the normal legislative processes that they picked up from the Democrats. >>

No,  a legislative "process" is the normal operating procedure of Senate and you're fine with Republicans denying American citizens aid -- just because they can.

Do you see how the GOP inaction will motivate voters to keep them in a permanent minority status?

Who'd you vote for:   the guy who works to improve your life or the guy who slow-walks any aid to you while you try to recover from the loss of a job?

The Republicans pulled this same stunt during the FDR years and it took them decades to dig out of their hole.

There no case to be made that the Democratic congresscritters are improving anybody's lives with this extension(how many times has this been done?) of unemployment benefits.  In fact, extension of unemployment benefits is actually proof that the Democratic congresscritters have not been improving lives.

The economy which the GOP tanked is just beginning to come back, no thanks to any Republican. It will take a while longer to recover from being stabbed in the back by you guys.

Oh really?

Here is more on what your heros pulled while 200,000 unemployed people lost their lifeline:

>>While the Senate was stuck in parliamentary limbo, some 200,000 people actively looking for work lost their unemployment benefits. The bill extends unemployment benefits for an additional 14 weeks across the country, and in some states with the highest unemployment the extension goes to 20 weeks. More on the bill here.
The extension itself was not controversial and passed 98-0. Getting there, however, was a Herculean parliamentary task that provides insight into just how hard it is to pass even popular legislation in the Senate with a minority party intent on opposing the majority's agenda step by laborious step.
Earlier Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) called for the third cloture vote on the bill to break a GOP filibuster. It passed 97-1. (That would be one Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) as the lone Republican to object in public on this round.)

(The question is wether the mainstream media will carry the news of what they aredoing. We need to focus on their childish behavior.)

The mainstream media has been acting strange these past few months. Just very little focus lately outside of health care when it comes to reporting on the actions of the House and Senate. We haven't heard much regarding the unemployment extension.  I agree how ridiculas it has gotten with conservative leaders in the House and Senate. I was listening to MPR tonight and they were talking about the elections in New York, Virginia, and New Jersey. One of the conservative anallysts mentioned a bit about whats happening in Washington. Claimed it a right of the minority to challenge and contest bills. I agree its childish how the Republicans handle it, but what to do when they have a legal right?

You know their going to drag this crap out for as long as they can to make Obama and the Democrats look bad. The longer some of these bills drag out the more it pisses off the moderate voters thinking that Obama and the Democrats aren't getting anything done. It will bakfire on the GOP, they will get cocky over those recent wins in Virginia and New Jersey. They will screw it up like always with their same old tired and useless policies. One step forward, two steps backwards, like they always do.

Its going to be interesting in the next eight months watching them screw up in Virginia and New Jersey.  They made a real mess of it in New York. I don't see them gaining much out of this in the next eight months with the voters in most states, especially with their economic policies. Eliminating unemployment extensions, and putting 10% of the American population in tent cities isn't going to help them. Like I said, always one step forward, and two steps backwards.

Toby-->>You don’t think it makes a difference to have money coming in when you are out of work? Shows what you don’t know could fill a barn and still be left hanging out.

Easing the effects of a bad situation does not change the bad situation, with a half million of jobs still being lost each month, their lives are not going to beem improved with a job in the next 14 weeks.  People's lives will be improving when the number of jobs is increasing, not when Democrats make themselves feel good by extending government handouts.

Toby-->>The economy which the GOP tanked is just beginning to come back, no thanks to any Republican. It will take a while longer to recover from being stabbed in the back by you guys.

The economy has not started to come back yet since it has taken a 1.4 trillion in deficit spending just to produce a single quarter of 'growth'.  And the changes that have occurred, as we went from a good economy with job growth and declining deficits to a bad economy with declining jobs and increasing deficits has been a Democratic controlled Congress and Presidency.

Why isn't there a case to be made for  the thousands of people who've done everything right and lost their savings, perhaps equity in their homes,  and have no health care?   When the wolf is at the door -- there's a case.

Do you know one of the primary reasons former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich became a liberal Democrat and his parents switched from staunch Republicans to registered,  activist Democrats?   It came down to how the Republican Party didn't give a damn about a small businessman,  fought tooth-and-nail any assistance to keep the Reich family business open,  and FDR's policies brought them back from the edge of the economic abyss.    This same scenario played out across the country and the Republicans lost generations of voters thanks to their recalcitrant attitude toward the Middle Class.

History's going to repeat itself.

Actually, I am very much for Health Care Reform, but I am tired of hearing about it. It is time to get moving already.

The media goes for the disruptive stuff, not the hard work that has been done on everything. But, in the end, the kids voted for the extension, the vote was 98-0. They are dragging their feet to keep work from being done.
