Thomas Frank is the Wall Street Journal's "house liberal." They provide him, with a regular column in order to offer some balance to their generally conservative views, which he does very ably; but he hardly represents the paper's opinions.
The NY Times used to do the same sort of thing in reverse with the late William Safire; but after they took away his political column, it was replaced by one from David Brooks, who is hardly a true conservative voice.
