I am a prosecuting attorney in a small town and will admit to having a few extra pounds on me. Not long ago, I was questioning a witness in an armed robbery case. I asked, "Would you describe the person you saw?"

The witness replied, "He was kind of short and stout."

"You mean short and stout like me?" I asked.

"Oh, no," the witness said. "He wasn't that fat."

Hi, John --

What is the source of that standard, and how was it arrived at?

Best regards,  4merCL

I can't answer your questions, but I can tell you that it was the standard in 1987, when I had bariatric surgery (vertical banded gastroplasty).

What was the source: A news story on H1N1 (Swine) Flu that said the obese are at slightly higher risk and the Morbid Obese are at much higher risk of complications.

How was the standard arrived at: I have no clue.  But the doctor speaking said it was "more than 100 pounds overweight"

How the standard weight tables are arrived at (Which say I should be 190 pounds when my best weight is 220) I also don't know (NOTE: At least one weight chart says I should bet 220) my actual weight is just over 300. and... SHRINKING. at least it was the last time I stepped on a Doctor's scale... Dropped 15 pounds from the prior visit I did.   Which by the way made the difference.. I have every reason to think I'll drop at last anothe 10 before I see him again.. (Same reasons)
