Tonight one of the finalists will be proclaimed winner or "best in show" in the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.  One of the finalists is a beagle named Uno.  No beagle has ever won even though it is one of the most popular "back yard breeds."  Don't know what a beagle is?  Think of Snoopy!  You can see a picture of Uno here.  We've had 3 beagles and our boys named the first one Snoopy after the Snoopy in Peanuts.

I'm rooting for Uno tonight.  I just think it's time that a sweet ordinary dog wins rather than all those fluffy, puffy show dogs.

Who do you want to win?

As you know by now, Uno won.   I heard it was the first time in history that the winner received standing ovation.  He responded with a beagle's characteristic baying.

Click here to see photos of Uno.

I think it's just great that the Beagle won!  They're such darling dogs.  We have a resident in our neighborhood with 5 - the house was built with them in mind; their own air-conditioned & heated double garage room with adjoining fenced yard, sun shade, grass, everything!  (a second garage for cars) When I walk our dog by that house they all start that funny noise they make - almost sounds like they're talking - I love it!

Every time I hear a beagle howl, I smile.  You know it's a beagle when you hear it.  They also have eyes like no other.

Nancy,

As you know, I am not a Beagle person, and I don't believe I ever 'rooted' for a Beagle to win anything. And I admit, I didn't root for Uno to win BIS at WKC - nor did I root for anyone else. However, looking at Uno, the overall dog, it is impossible to deny the animal has that special something that makes great show dogs great. His head and overall expression is magnificant, and his ring presence, well, it surely leaves nothing to be desired <g>.

So, congrats to Uno, and congrats to the Beagle's #1 fan, Nancy on a WKC first BIS for the breed <g>.

One of the "local" TV stations - it's really about 1.5 hours from us - shows rescue animals on the nightly news.  They had a basset hound (3 or 4 years of age IIRC) on Friday.  Bill said it was a good thing we didn't live there, because he'd have gone there to get it.  It has even sadder eyes and far bigger ears than beagles do.

I read somewhere on the net that there were people who went to WKC just because they were hoping Uno would win.  He's such a crowd pleaser.  Well, beagles love attention from people and will work to get it.  I thought it was so cool that he got a standing ovation.

BTW, I hope you weren't wanting one of those poodles to win.  I think it looks gross the way they do their hair.  Now I probably just offended all poodle owners, but honestly I wouldn't do that to a poodle.  of course when I looked at the beautiful maltese, I wondered  about all that hair hanging to the ground when it had to do its business.  I think that's high maintenance for all that beauty.

We have 4 Standard Poodles in the family and we aren't at all offended!  I really hate those show cuts - they look so ridiculous and un-dog-like; our poodles have simple, easy-care cuts and are very normal, active, athletic dogs, and loads of fun.  I always feel sorry for those show poodles "in hair" - they are so limited in their activity - can't let anything happen to that precious hair!  To me, it's not a good life for a dog.

Nancy,

Poodles are not for me. But that doesn't stop me from enjoying a magnificant animal when I see one. People who show dogs see them with a different eye than people who do not. I think there is nothing more beautiful than a top quality Poodle in full show cut. If I recall correctly, those clips were originally done (though not as profusely) as an aid to the dogs' swimming abilities. They were, in the beginning, water dogs. That clipped coat evolved into what it is today for show dogs.

WKC is and has been for as many years as I can remember, a presigious show and many people dress accordingly. The people it attracts are diverse, and you will often find celebs in the crowd, several of whom own show dogs. The people are a show in and of themselves <g>.  Dog people who are not showing go to see dogs they would not have an opportunity to see otherwise. Also, to meet with breeders, owners and handlers they would not normally get to chat with face-to-face.

I'm not into high-maintence coats, other than the constant coat blowing of the GSDs. That, I am stuck with. But again, I can admire the heck out of those dogs with stunning coats that require constant washing and grooming - as long as I don't have to do it.

So how come Bill didn't jump in the car and get the Basset? What's an hour and a half between friends <g>?

We had six Aussie babies Saturday night. They are soooooo beautiful! (Like this is just what I needed, six more animals to take care of <sigh>.)  LOL!

Those rescue dogs and cats that they show on the news are rapidly adopted.
