As some of you  know, I had a computer problem, and had to replace my home puter.  It came with Vista in it, and Vista and I did not get along with each other.  When Microsoft came out with WIndows 7,  on the advice of my techhie computer repair person, I went out and bought it.  I bought a  three computer licensed version..........and so far I am much, much happier.  I was especially pleased with the ability to download a program so that Windows creates a virtual hard disk that can run XP programs.

How about you?  Have you looked at WIndows 7?  Windows 7 seems to create the ability for you to have your own family networks.  What do you think about that?

I'm glad that the usual new release hype about a Microsoft product might actually be correct for once.  I avoided Vista and I'm still using Win XP on both my main computer and my laptop computer.  It's more likely I'll get a laptop with Win 7 on it in the next year than do anything with my main computer.  I had it rebuilt about a year ago and from what I've read, an upgrade from XP to 7 is a lengthy and non-trivial task, requiring moving files and re-installing software.  It took me weeks to move my files to the rebuilt computer a year ago and I never did get all my old mail files (on Thunderbird) successfully transferred.

I'm in no hurry to get a new computer or Win 7.  I suspect I will do so sooner or later, but both of my current computers work, and the main computer is still fast and efficient.

Best Buy began offering, today, a Windows 7 promotion.  The promotion was that they would install Windows 7 for 40.00.

To install WIndows 7 on Vista was easy, and a 15 minute job.

Good.  Perhaps they've finally done something almost right.

But what advantage is there for the ordinary user of XP to make the change?  (That would generally involve buying a new computer or, if keeping the old computer, taking a day or more to move everything off the existing hard drive to a backup drive, preserving all programs and data files, then installing Win 7, then moving all software and files back.  And of course if you buy a new computer you've got to install all your software on that machine and move your data files over.)

If you have a CD burner, you can copy everything onto a CD, then back it off, fairly quickly.  I was told the Windows 7 is much more stable.

It'd be far easier for me to use an external hard drive for the purpose.  My nominally 500 GB C: drive has 465 GB available, 416 GB free, so about 50 GB are in use.  Fortunately my E: drive, where I have a lot of data storage and photo files, wouldn't be affected.

(computer, close your eyes, don't look at this)

I'm not having any stability issues with XP.

(OK, computer, you can look now

Most of the time, my xp computer was stable, but it did have its moments.  It had to visit the computer emergency room several times, the first time when I was trying to run SPSS on it-it took two restarts, and five hours after the second restarts to successfully conclude the number crunching.  No choccies for it that time!

Ah, there's the problem!

The choccies are for you, not the computer!

Well, like a good puter owner, I hold the choccies until the computer needs some.

Sorta like Staff.
