This year with so many out of work, many families have decided to hold back.  So, why don't we come forth with some ideas of spending less, enjoying Christmas more?  For example:

1.  How about making a popcorn chain to put up on the tree?

2.  How about simple, inexpensive craft gifts?

3. (Your contributions)

>>>How about making a popcorn chain to put up on the tree?<<<

Most people save their decorations from year to year, so that's probably not much of an expense.  I'm all for having living trees.  I'm not sure if I can move the big pot with the pine tree into the house after 5 years outside, but I'll try.

Since I lost all my Christmas decorations in the divorce (he doesn't even put up a tree!), I have replaced them bit by bit, and I have several more personal trinkets for the tree.  For example, I have the first two pairs of eyeglasses my daughter wore at age 2 and 4.  They hang with a cute ribbon along with one of her pacifiers,  the little Chinese slipper she wore on arrival in Holland, the Tamoguchi she had at age 8,  a couple of duplo blocks and legos, key chains that seem to multiply all year, and some doo-dads with no name that we brought back from Taiwan.  This year my tree will have the addition of my Obama button!

I'll make several gifts of food this year.  I bought Christmas bags and boxes similar to what Chinese food is delivered, and I'll make cookies and brownies for neighbors and friends.  I have my mother's fruit cake receipe and a dozen little loaf pans...I might give it a try.  How much can go wrong??

We're going to USA for Thanksgiving!  It will be Liann's first, and for me it will be the first in 37 years!   I had a Delta voucher to use before the end of the year, and my boss said 'yes' to a week off.  Liann has only read about "black Friday" and wants to experience it up close and personal.  I wonder if Dunkin' Donuts and Starbucks will have enough coffee to get me through the day!

So, to sum, you don't think popcorn will work?  My family has done popcorn intermittantly.  It usually gets eaten before it makes it to the tree.  And then there are those popcorn fights!  Kinda dangerous for the ornaments, but I strive to make em safe.  We have some expensive ornaments (my X and I divided).  I still love my German manger scene, where the candles cause the manger to revolve.  My X  and I made some ceramic decorations-she got the tree, and I got the yule logs-they are quite pretty.\

My biggest problem is getting the house clean for Xmas.  Three bachelors, and 2 old, male dogs means a lot of cleaning.

How about some suggestions that bachelors can do?

Christmas should be more about spending time with family and friends than spending a fortune on gifts. For my sister I'd like to, this year pick out what she wants at Walmart up to a small dollar amount, like 20.00  She tends to lose gift cards or misplace them so I figure it's best this way. For Christmas cards, to save money I'll be mailing cards to those I don't have an email for and emailing ecards to those I do. There are some very pretty ecards online. I used to put up a tree but I don't any more especially now that I have brat cat, no telling what she'd do to it...LOL. You know, I could be wrong but I think it's more often in the buyer that we think others would appreciate expensive gifts. That a gift isn't nice unless we spend alot on it. As tacky as it might sound I even thought of giving a friend a care package full of stuff she uses alot of and maybe put an inexpensive little Christmassy gift with them.

Those are good ideas Patty, and I am sure some folk may try them.

From a male's point of view, we get that all the time, and I love it, to a point.  I hate the Christmas gifts where the person is trying to change me.  Therefore, I enjoy it more when I get a cologne, aftershave, shower soap which is an identical replacement item for stuff that I use.  I am not so sure about new colognes and aftershaves.  A little change is nice, but I like what I choose the other elevan months of year.

Does anyone have any hints for bachelors when buying for the  a) a girlfriend   b) an ex girlfriend still friend    c) a daughter or mother  d) a woman when he has to be a secret Santa?

hmmmmm you could just take her out shopping and let her choose what she wants then take her out to dinner, even if it's an ex you're buying for. I found mom was very hard to buy for as she got older because she had just about everything. My sister loses gift cards so I'd like to take her to a favorite store of hers, Walmart, give her a limit and let her choose what she wants. She has a roommate so one time they got something together. Plus with gift cards, in this economy we never know if a store will even be in business any more by the time the recipient gets around to using it.

I must be related to your sister.  I manage to lose gift cards also.

(Sigh)

Use the cards right away. Or stash them in your wallet or a safe place right away. The key words here are "right away".
