I'm going to post this in both the Photography and Gadgets & Gear fora, as I think they'll be interest in both.

I have just bought a Smartparts 15" digital frame from Brookstone. I didn't go looking for one, but saw they had a big sale on all their digital frames and now carried the 15" one from Smartparts (who make good digital frames) for $199.

The 15" screen has a 4:3 ratio, so that means it is 12"x9". That means the 3:2 shots from my Canon DSLR will have a 1/2" border top and bottom in landscape (for an 8"x12" image) and a 3" border in portrait shots (for a 9"x6" image). I've dropped in two SD cards: one was the 4 GB SDHC card from my Canon SD800, which played well and even the AVI videos played well (with sound), andthe other was a 2 GB micro SD card from my phone, in adapter, and the still shots showed well, but the MP4 videos lacked sound.

Three problems so far (other than the MP4 sound):

1. I couldn't find the power inlet. The manual doesn't give any directions.I finally found that you had to remove a screw, lift off a panel, and then I could see the inlet. The reason must be so that the connector doesn't easily pull out.

2. The cable isn't very long, and the section from the power brick to the frame is just a few inches. This is a big problem if I want to mount the unit on a wall - I don't want the big black brick dangling below. I'll have to make up an extension cable for the DC part of the cord.

3. There is a red hot pixel in the center of the top third of the screen. It only shows up with a dark segment there, but it is a real problem.

I've just had the unit for an hour, so I'll post more after a day or so, but I plan to take it back and exchange it for another in the hope it doesn't have a hot pixel.

Note that if you can't get to a Brookstone, Amazon has the same unit for the same price.

Note the VBG at the end of my post.

However, for those who go to both places, duplication can lead to duplicated reading.

I haven't tried it with music yet (not a priority) - first, I'd like to find out what video format I can use to make it play movies with sound.

Update.

I took it back to Brookstone today to exchange it for another. Now, the unit has a completely different box - the old one looked just like the Smartparts one I'd seen elsewhere, but with a Brookstone logo in one corner and had Smartparts on the back, while this one has the white color common to Brookstone and only mentions Brookstone. Inside the box, all the paperwork only says Brookstone, the unit has the Brookstone label on the back, and this unit hasa card indicating where to find the power input connector. The other big difference is the price - last week, the sale price was $199, while today the sale price was $250. They did the exchange without any issue, giving me the $250 unit without any additional charge.

But the important issue is the screen. Before I left, I put four 1024x768 images on a CF card - each a solid color, using black(for any hot pixels), white (for any dead pixels), grey and light blue. The red hot pixel showed up on all but the white image. With the new one, all four images look flawless - except that there is a tiny bit of dirt behind the glass that I can see if I look really closely at all but the black images. But as I have to look VERY closely, I think it's OK.

Following the first post, this update will be on both fora.

I went by Staples today to pick up something else. They had the Smartparts 15" frame on clearance for $175.

I received an 8-inch Brookstone digital frame ("My Life") as a holiday gift from my daughter.  I loaded it with some images from my computer using the supplied USB cable.  The display itself was nice; pictures were sharp and bright with no hot pixels.

My beef is with the controls.  They are located on the top so you have to reach across the frame to operate - rather awkward.  The buttons are noisy when you press them.  To delete pictures, you have to delete them one-by-one - there's no batch delete function - which could be a bother if you have a lot of pictures loaded.

Also in slideshow mode, there's no way to manually control it once it starts.  I'd like to be able to pause or reverse or fast forward.

I'm debating whether to return this unit.  Is there any model with better controls?

Jan,

While I would not recommend any particular brand I would strongly recommend that you get one that accepts a memory card that can be removed and put into a card reader. That way you can input and delete pictures with ease and, with a second card, have different themes, subjects or whatever you want ready to display.

Does the one you have, when connected to via USB, give full access to all the pictures? If so, you should be able to add and delete the files as required.

Our family bought my wife a 7 inch frame for Christmas and that accepts SD cards, it has various display wait times from 5 seconds to 12 hours and a variety of ways it changes between pictures.

Hi John,

This unit does accept a memory card (or flash drive).  But I think my main use of the photo frame will be for viewing photos that I've first downloaded to my computer from the camera and previewed/adjusted with Photoshop.

Yes, when connected via USB, it does give full access to the pictures.  In the manual, it talks about tranferring pictures from computer to the frame's hard drive, but it did not mention deleting them that way.  After I read your message, I tried dragging a picture from the frame to my computer's trash and that seemed to work to delete it.

What kind or brand of frame did your wife get?  How does she plan to use it?  Just leave it turned on with a continuous display of pictures?

Jan,

The brand is Matsui which, I believe, is specific to a chain of UK stores. It was an inexpensive frame but quite sufficient for my wife's needs.

It sits on a shelf close to where she parks her powerchair and she can look at it as and when she wants.

I have ordered another 2Gb card so that I can pre-load it one day for her to view pictures the next while I re-load the other card with more pictures.

I have enough stored pictures to last for a long time and we frequently get new pictures of our grandchildren.

When time permits I will sort my files into themes such as one showing the development of the grandchildren from birth to today, places we have been, friends and family and so on.

The one job that will take time is making sure that the pictures I select are all the same way up, rotating pictures can be very time consuming.

Both my new 15" one and a 7" one we bought for my mother-in-law over a year ago are made by Smartparts. The controls on units are hidden behind the frame on ones side, but that's not a problem as they both came with remotes (which is all I use).

Most of my shots are RAW, which I tidy up on my PC and then convert to JPGs at the resolution of the display (1024x768 for my 15" screen). I then put the JPGs onto memory cards and use those cards on the digital frame.

My Brookstone model did not come with a remote, but it sure would be nice.

How much control does your Smartpants unit allow in slideshow mode?  Can you pause or go back to a previous picture?

I've just given it a try. If I push the "play" button on the remote while the slide show is playing, it acts like a pause. Once paused, I can go forwards/backwards as I wish and then press the play button again to resume the slide show from the current slide.

I know that both our frames are made by Smartparts. Brookstone may have purchased from multiple sources, so yours could be from another company - or maybe the remote is still lost in the box somewhere!

No such luck for finding a remote lost in the Brookstone box.   I'd much rather have a Smartparts unit with a remote, especially now that you said you can control the slideshow with it. I may have to look into exchanging this gift....

I'm thinking of getting my 88-year-old dad a digital frame for Christmas, which I would fill with pictures from the rest of my family.  I'm thinking of something in the 7-10 inch range.  Is there a consensus on what brands are the leaders?  An easy-to-use interface is a must.  Also, my computer and camera use CF cards, not SD, and so it would be handy if the frame would accept those (preferably both).
