Thanks Jan!

I like the closing comment: "Yeah, Android's not as polished or smooth, but you know what? It's actually quite livable over here."

Living "over here", I think it's a fair assessment. Android and its apps are evolving very rapidly. Noticeable and nice improvements just since I got my G1 in August. We've gone from Android 1.0 to 1.5 to 1.6. Android 1.0 was around for 10 month, 1.6 came about a month after 1.5.

I prefer my iPod Nano for music, but I have lots of phone searching and watching YouTube on the phone. <g>

You're welcome, Doug.  But you're not an iPhone switcher, are you?

The article mentioned Android 2.0.  Can you upgrade your G1?

Jan,

>> you're not an iPhone switcher, are you? <<

I'm a Mac user, but not an iPhone user. Did I mention that I despise AT&T? ;-) I switched from a Treo 680.

>> The article mentioned Android 2.0.  Can you upgrade your G1? <<

Good question. Android is not user upgradeable (at least not unless you "root" the phone, which is a bit like jail-breaking an iPhone). Android updates are pushed to the phone over the air. When it has all arrived a message pops up asking if you're ready to upgrade. If you are, the phone shuts down, the upgrade installs itself and the phone reboots.

Shortly after I got my G1, which came with 1.0, T-Mobile pushed out Cupcake (Android 1.5). About a month after that they pushed out Donut (1.6). I'm running Donut now. Android 2.0 is Eclair, available only on the Droid. T-Mobile hasn't said when or if they will push Eclair to G1s. The next Android version after Eclair is Flan.

In the specific case of the G1 there is some question whether Eclair will fit in the operating system partition. Some pundits said Donut wouldn't fit, but it does. :-)

In some ways the G1 is a draft of future Android phones, but I really enjoy it.

Oooo, clever names.  Making me hungry......

Glad to hear you are enjoying your G1.  Any plans to switch to Verizon's Droid?

BTW, AppleInsider is reporting: Apple to launch Verizon iPhone in Q3 2010:
A new report citing sources in the Taiwan handset supply chain says Apple has contracted to produce a UMTS/CDMA hybrid iPhone due in the third quarter of next year that will enable the company to sell a single global handset to all carriers, and specifically to Verizon Wireless in the US.

Sounds like the same rumors about Apple's "tanlet"...

None. T-Mobile has taken good care of me over the years. I get a 12% off of my bill... both lines. <g> Besides, there's a GSM version of the Droid coming, called the Milestone. It's actually even a bit nicer. For example, it has full multi-touch, which is missing from Droid.

You mean the iPad?   I'm eager to see that project come to fruition.  Here's some of the latest buzz:

Nice.  What did you do to deserve that?   Pledge your customer loyalty for the rest of your life?  <g>

Let's just say it's an "affinity program". They asked me when I got the G1 if I was a member of AAA. I said no, but I'm a member of <another organization>. That got me 12% off my bill monthly. With mandatory 3G data plan my G1 is actually a bit cheaper every month than my Treo was with a cheaper EDGE data plan.

That's just like the Verizon 15% off for LEOs and support personnel.
