In 2006, when I visited the Eden project, I brought back a souvenir a Dendrobium phalaenopsis. I was new into growing orchids, and hadn't quite got the watering etc right so by 2008 it was not good. However it produced some babies and I hopefully potted two on in accordance with my orchid book instructions.

I must be getting better at growing them, as one of those babies has just produced a flowering spike. I'll send a picture when it breaks - but I am purring.

Fran

Yeaaaa Fran!  It's so nice to have an orchid bloom.  I've had one that a friend gave to me at a house warming party in 1990.  It's bloomed a few times for me but it's had a hard life.  One year it was almost killed by ants infesting the pot.  It's now been moved to a place where the ants won't get it, but it's also a place I tend to forget about it.  I'll have to move it again.  When it blooms it's beautiful and the blooms last such a long time.  Enjoy and I'll be looking for pictures when it opens.

I'm normally death to indoor plants, about the only one that has consistantly survived is 20+ year old christmas cactus. But I can see why orchids can be addictive - not only the trick of getting the growing conditions right, but getting them to reflower - as the blooms are so lovely and last for so long. I'm gradually learning how to keep them alive and healthy - to have them re bloom is just magical.

What kind is your one? - if its still going strong after 10 years you must be giving it exactly the conditions it likes.

It appears that I have at least one neighbor who has no patience with orchids which are no longer blooming, because I have acquired a number of orchid plants on our building's "free shelf".

I don't do much to care for them. A little water now and then, a bit of plant food some of the time when watering. An individual plant that I'd taken to work — well, I'd been ignoring it — one day I turned around and noticed that it had a spike with fat buds, ready to start blooming in a few days. Those buds must have been quietly developing for weeks, before I took note of them.

I read in the last year, that a spike that's stopped blooming should only be cut back if it is dying. Turns out, a spike can send out an extension, with new buds, if given a chance.

That gives me one more reason to lavish my orchids with neglect.

I don't know why others say they can't see your pic. I clicked on the thumbnail, and it looks good to me.

We can now see it because Fran edited her message. I think it took a long time for the edit to be posted though, since when I looked earlier this morning, it hadn't updated and now it has.

I once had an orchid that sent two spikes off the original spike. I think it was in bloom for 6 or 7 months, perhaps longer.

Prolly one of the reasons I like them. I am usually death to indoor plants except christmas cactus. Its taken a year or so to learn the different likes and dislikes of the various types - but I get a buzz, from getting it right and their reblooming. The flowers last a good long time too which is bonus.

I hadn't really like orchids before, but thats changed now.

I see that several of my orchids are putting up buds now.  One dendrobium has a rather long stalk with probably ten or twelve buds, and one or two will probably open in the next week or two.

I have a vanda orchid that has a huge bud.  It will open into a stem with several flowers on it, but I can't predict when.  I have two more vandas that ought to bloom, but I don't see any sign of it yet.  They two that don't seem to be blooming have brilliant blue flowers when they do decide to bloom.

At least one of my phaleonopsis  plants is putting up a bloom stem.  In fact, it has two of them, only about five inches tall as yet.  It has two stems last year, too.

I seem to be getting quite a collection, and I really don't know how it happened.  And I have babies (Keiki) coming on two or three.

I have one or two cattlyeas but they won't bloom for a while yet.  I've had one of them for years, and it sometimes has eight or ten blooms at one time.  It finally outgrew its pot, though, and I divided off a great many pieces last year.  All of them seem to be doing well.

I enjoy orchids.  I find them easy to grow, though I confess to knowing very little about them.  I just water and fertilize them a little every week, and they grow and bloom.  And I re-pot once in a while.
