Did you know that there are actually people who enjoy tidying up, keeping their mail and papers sorted, hanging up their clothes, alphabetizing the spice rack and yes, even routinely recycling old magazines? There's a good reason for this behavior. These people have figured out that mess is stress.

Searching for a phone number buried in a stack of paper fragments and fighting through the "top drawer" in the kitchen for six barbecue skewers is frustrating. Tripping over discarded shoes or toys is aggravating (and potentially dangerous.) And it takes far longer to iron a pair of pants that have spent a few days in a ball on the floor than the twenty seconds to hang them up.

There will never be a better time than now to regain control of your home and office space. Living and moving around junk is time consuming and turmoil is tiring. But, how do we get started? I started with my closet but I have yet to get to the clutter and the almost winter to do list. What's a person to do?

Here's one tip - and be sure to ADD YOURS!!

Whenever you have a few minutes to spare put away five or ten items that are not in their correct place. These could be toys that the kids have left somewhere, letters that need filing away or odd socks that need putting in a drawer.

Yes, there are. They just haven't found the necesary profesional help !<BG>

Seriously now, I agree that a certain degree of orderliness is nice, but to have someone come after you tidying up can drive one nuts!

I agree but I just spent - get this an entire week cleaning out my clothes closet getting rid of junk. I didn't work on it all day but an hour here and there. What can I say..I rather like not finding anything. Ha!

Every once in a while I get the urge to clean things up, like the garage. Then for the next 6 months I can't find a darned thing in there!.

Hey, I can relate to you all. This is good and gives me reason to follow down that road of - I can find it but no one else can. For me, I say it's a time issue but I swear I CAN find things. I don't have a dirty home but some would say it's mildly cluttered as I tend to surround myself with things of comfort.

Now the clothes closet was another thing. I have a mound - no lie of clothes waiting to be boxed up to be given away that is higher than one of those tall dressers and twice as wide. I had clothes in there that one would call vintage that I am NEVER going to want to wear again or would it ever fit. Then I had things that I loved back then and it had memories so I don't want to let it go but it is going. Oh, this was a HUGE undertaking for me to reduce clutter but it's not gone yet. It just keeps calling me as it sits on my bedroom floor.

This clutter business is a sickness, I tell you but surely doesn't kill you and hey, maybe I need that particular thing 10 years from now. How will I ever know?

Frank:

I used to work with an individual that was an OCD "neat freak". This guy would go ballistic if you placed a message slip on his desk instead of in the IN basket. His desktop only had a blank pad of paper and the telephone. His pencils were all the same lenght, sharpened and lined up on the right side of the top drawer. When he left for home he would place his chair at just the exact distance from the desk every time (would sometimes measure it) and if he was on the phone and a call came in for him and you took the message, you could not tell him afterwards that so and so had called. You had to WRITE a "while you were out" message and put it in the IN basket.

I would, on purpose leave my desk an unholy mess, with fast food wrappers, empty coffee cups, piles of papers, etc just to watch him sit there and squirm. The final straw was when he came in on a saturday and "straightened up" the office, used a  Brother labelmaker to label EVERYTHING in the office, including each and every file folder in the 4 cabinets! A petition was circulated among the other employees and he was "transfered" to where he could work by his lonesome self.

Believe, this person was unreal.

John,

It took me several years to convince my mother-in-law that my coffee cup didn't need washing the moment I put it down. <g>

It does seem that soon after something is thrown out it could be used for something.

No, doubt but I have also worked with people who were insane who were not neat freaks. There are a lot of strange folks out there. There are many who march to beat of a different drummer who are NOT insane.

Frank:

It's that fear that I will need it as soon as I get rid of it that keeps me cluttered. It's a sickness, I tell you but a comfie one at that.

Today the daughter that moved back (long story with 2 rabbits and a dog) cleaned my storage room that really was a dining area but it was a storage room. You get the point, I am sure. It can now be turned into the room it was supposed to be when the two dog cages go. I just need to find someone who wants them.

Little by little I am cleaning but it's slow and I am still having a major time with ridding myself of things I think I will use before I am 90.

I can't imagine what it would be like to have to move into an apartment. I may cry for a week about stuff lost.

Hire help, of course <g>.  Check with the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) at http://www.napo.net/ for referrals to certified organizers in your area.

That depends on how much of it you have.  I can barely walk through my house, and took a bad spill one day when I tripped over the vacuum cleaner <sigh>.

Then it is trying to tell you something. I have pockets of that here and there but actually working on getting rid of that. can't see me ever being clutter free as I simply can't give up some things but I am better. Did place a HUGE pile of clothes waiting to be bagged to go from the closet and it's about 8 garbage bags worth. Ha!

Yard sale time. After my sister passed away last year(she had so much stuff, i took her kids days to go thru it) I thought 'Do I really need/use all this stuff??". So i had a yard sale, which took up my back & front yard and carport. Sure I miss some stuff, but I kept what few things i felt I really enjoyed. Soon after we moved to a brand new(SMALL)house. I am keeping it clutter free, tho I had to re~de~clutter the closet to get to the holiday stuff(when we moved in I stuck boxes with loose stuff, pencils, papers, ect in there. Who knew 7 months would go by so quick!!)Good luck!!! It is never too late to be clutter free. I am 46!!

Yes. It's a lot easier to move around the house when one is not running into everything or knocking down piles of stuff!
