Evolutionary Past May Determine How We Choose Leaders (October 26, 2009) -- Why did Barack Obama win the US election and did the fact he is over six feet tall influence the voters? Researchers argue that due to 'a hangover from our evolutionary past' factors like age, sex, height and weight play a major part in the determining our choice of leaders. ...

I agree up to a point.  When I planned to marry a young man an inch shorter than I was, my dad told me I should never marry a short man;  they were usually cocky. My dad was 6'2".  My first husband turned out not only to be cocky but a narcissist as well.

When we finally divorced after 37 years of struggle on my part, I met a 6'4" widower with whom I mutually fell in love.  My dad said, "at last, you've got a real man."  We've been together for seventeen years and married for sixteen. And my Jim is a gentle, kind, loving, giving person.

Perhaps our fathers determine our choice of leaders!  :-)  I think height in a man is important to most people whether they know it or not.  I think a certain beauty in a woman is important to most people.  I personally deny what I just said, but yet I find myself admiring tall people and attractive people.  ????  Or perhaps we admire what qualities we do not have...my gorgeous"perfect cousin" has very thin hair that is hard to manage...I have thick healthy shiney hair that looks good tousled or any other way.  She admits she's jealous of my hair.  And I say to her..."I should look so good."

Brownie,

>>I think height in a man is important to most people whether they know it or not.<<

Know it or not I made it through life at a mere 5ft 5in, less now that I am older.

I have never considered myself to have been arrogant, I did well enough in my working life, I had a wonderful 37 year marriage to a wonderful woman, I don't think I have ever made an enemy in my life and I have many friends who I value highly.

What you are and what you do in life is far more important than how tall you are.

Regards,

John

John, my dissertation was tongue in cheek humor and not meant to degrade anybody.  I have a wonderful son who is 5'5";  I had a mother-in-law who was 4'11".  My daughter is 5'2".  I certainly have nothing against short people.  I am 5'6", but I have a large hooked nose...thin lips...a large jaw..and I'm thin everywhere but my middle...which looks a great deal like I may be pregnant at 74, .and a chiropractor told me that my head was on crooked, so I'm not terribly attractive, although my husband tells me I'm sexy.  Go back to Jim's question and take it from there.  I think the intention was to discover whether people tend to vote for people who tall, etc.

I'm glad you're not cocky, arrogant, and narcissistic.

:-) Brownie

I have been married to the same lady for 45 years. I can not truly say what attracted me to her but I was lost upon first sight. It only took me from early May of 63 to September 7 that same year to get that first date. Perhaps it was being put off that did the trick. I was not used to being held at arms length so long.

Incidentally Sept 7 is a larger celebration in our family than our actual wedding day.

I don't think anyone would deny that. But what we consciously know to be true and the less noble things we act on are often quite diferent things, as you no doubt know.

I'm convinced that this is so.  Dale wasn't a vain man in any way except for his height, which at its maximum was 6'3-3/4".  It disturbed him that he had shrunk to 6'2".  One of his sons is 6'5", and one of his grandsons is 6'7".  Since we're not really in contact except by email, I don't know what effect, if any, height has with them.

We labor heavily in our pronouncements to be the "Leader of the Free World" every 4 years. Great promises are made to assuage voters. And the usual outcome finds the taller candidate winning the race for president. Taller men just have better arguments?

Generally, taller men have a more commanding presence, so people listen to them more closely.  At least, that's my theory.

"Commanding presence" says much about our perceptions as a social species.

I am a 6 footer but have known men of a "commanding presence" who were shorter. Certainly I see taller men as having an imposing presence upon initial contact but I tend to evaluate body language and presentation after that to make my determinations if there appears to be potential for extended association.

I seem to be predisposed to lead in most situations and groups but I do not see it as a function of my height. I suppose it could be due to the perceptions of others based strictly on my height.

In the military one has to achieve a certain rank before being entrusted with official leadership. Once I achieved that rank and was being assigned to lead my first work party My Immediate superior advised that when I arrived on scene the men would recognize the fact of my being put in charge or named a leader. I was further advised that the men who would be in my group would have already determined a leader among their numbers. I was assured that if I wanted to be an effective leader of men I would learn to identify the de facto leader and cause him to accept me as his leader. That needed to be my first act if I were to actually become the leader of the group. I apply that to almost every situation I find myself engaged in with a group. I always thought my knowledge in that regard was the reason I was chosen to lead so often.

That's so, and it often has nothing to do with height.

I remember the comment (yours or that of one of your fellow Tall Club members) that "If I ever met Mr. Right, he'd be Mr. Short."  Then lo, you did indeed meet Mr. Right, and he was Mr. Short in both name and height.  (I started to say "stature," but that word has more connotations than just height.  Ed's stature is far greater than his height.)

I was a wee bit taller than Mr. High, and I kept him entirely too long.  And that's the long and the short of it!   LOL!  ooooooh...sorry.  Sometimes we just have to be TOO silly.

IMO, most people vote by gut feeling, for and against, and probably don't know the reason why.

Richard,

I agree!  We pick the lessor of two evils as we distrust politicians.  This time we disliked Bush and anyone associated with him.
