Help!  I've recently bought an Apple Macbook Pro 10.5.8.  Their support hasn't helped me get on line with an external modem when using dialup.  Does Netscape deal with Apples?  Help!

Jim:

We have at least one Mac user in this forum, and Mac OSX is a Unix variant, as is Linux.  I have no familiarity with them, but Doug does.  Perhpas he will offer some help.

I looked around, and it appears that there is no specific Mac forum here, but there is a section on the Laptop Computing Forum devoted to Laptops that are NOT MS equipped.  You might try there as well.

Frank.

Also, try posting to the "Mac & Apple" section of the "Gadgets and Gear" forum which has some fairly sharp users.

Jim, welcome to Linux Forum.

There are some pretty smart Mac users in the Gadgets & Gear Community who may be able to help you. Look for the Mac and Apple discussion.

Another good place to get Mac support and information is at Snarkish.com on their computing boards. When the Mac forum left here, most of the members moved to Snarkish.com.

>> I've recently bought an Apple Macbook Pro 10.5.8. <<

I think you're telling us that you bough a MacBook Pro that is running OS X Leopard version 10.5.8. If you explain what you have this way it will be easier for people who may be able to help you to understand.

How are you connecting your external modem to your MacBook? MacBooks don't have serial ports.

Did you buy the Apple USB modem or are you trying to use a regular serial modem?
You'll need a USB to serial adapter, such as Keyspan.

I just checked, the NetScape ISP does not support Macs.
Looks like you need a new ISP.

Hi George,

When I bought the computer I was told it had no built in modem
so I asked to by one and was told Apple didn't sell one. Is that
correct?????
I then went to Best Buy and got an external modem. It connects
to the computer with a standard USB plug. I'm not familiar with
the Keyspan serial setup your refering to. Could you explain a
little.
The guy at Best Buy just sold me the modem and didn't mention
anything about a Keyspan. The Apple is a new experience for me and
I'm still having Windows withdrawals.

Hi again George,
Hardly anyone supports Netscape ISP. I use Compuserve and
it's a Netscape browser. I also use ATT for my DSL at home.
However, for both Isp's I minimize and use IE. It works much
better.

I do not use a USB modem but am a little familiar with Macs. When you run System Preferences and open the Network panel, does it see your modem? Is there an Assist or Setup button shown when you select the modem? Assuming your ISP uses a standard connection protocol the Setup Wizard should be able to step you through setting it up. What ISP are you using and do they have any Mac help?

Jim,

Apple laptops haven't had build in modems or serial ports for along time. Neither my current MacBook, nor its predecessor iBook have modems.

What happens when you plug your USB modem into your MacBook? Do you see any messages appears?

After you plug the modem in, open up System Prefrences (click on the Apple at the left end of the menu bar at the top of the screen and select Preferences). Window full of preference icons sort of like the Windows Control Panel will appear. Do you see a Preference icon called Modem when the USB modem is plugged in?

They won't last long. <g> You may find David Pogue's "Switching to the Mac" helpful

Jim,

Don't worry about the Keyspan. Keyspan is a vendor of USB devices, one of which is a USB to RS-232 converter. I have one for connecting some unusual devices to my Mac.

When I had an AT&T DSL account, I had the option of using a dial up connection when I was away from home and WiFi services. I used the Apple USB modem to connect in this scenario.

Hi Sky,
I have 2 ISP's. Compuserve and ATT. I've contacted both but neither
were any help in getting me connected to the Net. Compuserve was of no help.
ATT helped once but nothing the 2nd time I called.
I'll try your idea and let you know.

What are the questions you're being asked in the modem preferences that you can't answer?

Can you post a screen shot of the preferences, please? You can use the Preview application to make the screen shot. Select the preferences window and save it as a PNG file.

Wow, I did not know Preview did this (just tried it). I have always used the Grab application in Utilities to do screen captures.

Preview can do lots of interesting things besides preview files of many formats. It gained a lot of capabilities in Leopard (OS X 10.5), and a few more in Snow Leopard.

One of the features I really like is adding pages from one PDF to another by drag and drop from the thumbnail sidebar.

Preview can also do some basic image editing tasks so you don't need to import picture into iPhoto for touch-up. It can adjust color balance, size, rotation, and convert image file types.

It isn't your father's Preview any more. <g>

I never got into iPhoto. Mostly because I already had a system for organizing my photos and have been using Photoshop since version 4 (now using Photoshop Elements 6). I saw no reason to import all my image files into iPhoto and have to store them in my user folder. I keep them on their own hard drive in my own organized fashion.
