Interesting article showing that the sheer volume of devices from many manufacturers will overwhelm the iPhone OS.  There is no question of any Android phone 'killing' the iPhone, as the iPhone is a good product and has a lot of loyal fans.  However, as time goes on, it will command a smaller audience.  At present the iPhone App store has much more depth than Android, but that will probably change.

Frank,

At latest count the Apple app store has 100,000 applications. I can't imagine how many of what there must be, or how you find and choose among different apps. The Android Market is up to 12,000 apps.

There was another article on that, but I didn't post it.  It basically questioned the 100K apps for the iPhone, and asked how many were actually used.  That is a valid question.  I would think 12K would be plenty, but Android is only just beginning.

However, 'pundits' have to have something to rave about, I guess.  :)

Android will overwhelm iPhone OS due to volume. iPhone OS may have 10x the "area" if apps are area and number of device types is "depth". Android's will be very deep in the same way that Windows volume is very deep compared to OS X.

Ray, and interesting thing has started happening in the Android apps world. "Name brand" apps are being released for Android at the same time as for iPhone, or very shortly after. Photoshop Mobile from Adobe is an example this week. In some cases the Android versions are more feature rich than the iPhone versions. As I was telling Frank, one of these is DataViz's many-platform classic Documents To Go.

I suspect that as there are more and more Android devices the number of apps will start to grow rapidly. Considering that there were 12,000 before the Droid was released, when in the US there were 2 Android phones, both from T-Mobile, and in Europe a couple in the UK, and in Germany and France, the numbers were pretty respectable. Android phones have been on the market since October 2008, the iPhone has been out for three years.

The 'Google' name means something, doesn't it?  :)

Frank,

Interesting to speculate. A lot of the buzz around Android right now is being generated by the Droid and its association with Verizon. References to Google are buried in the general news stories. The Google connection seems to get more play in the geekier stories and web sites.

I think that some of the brand name apps are arriving because they smell worthwhile numbers of users. Facebook would be an example. Another would be Remember the Milk, which is a brand in the iPhone world.

I think Google is trying to walk a fine line between visibility and invisibility.
