[Msg # 129670.1 ]
Had a couple of crashes - assumed (don't never assume nothing) I had broken something. It got more persistent so rebooted to an earlier slackware and got the crash also. Tried to boot off a CD and the system halted with a CRC (system redundancy checck) error. (Luckily I have several computers and am somewhat backed up).
First thought it might be a loose cable somewhere in the machine - any thoughts?

CRC tends to sound like memory to me. Why not post in the hardware forum, as this does not seem to be a linux problem?

If the crash is occurring after the machine has been on for a while, make sure that you do not have something overheating. Install an applet or command to read out the chip temperatures and fan speeds if you system board is equipped for this. Blow any dirt out of the cabinet and make sure that the fans are running and not making noise. Sometimes you have to unbolt a fan to clear dirt from the heat sink underneath it.
If your hard drive supports SMART, install a utility or command to access that information and make sure that a problem is not showing up on the drive.
Next, re-seat all of the connectors, including the chips in sockets and memory sticks. Clean the dirt out first.
If still no joy, you need to make sure that the power supply voltages are within spec. This requires an accurate digital voltmeter so you may be looking at a trip to a shop at this point.
The next step is to start swapping parts. If you have duplicate machines, you are in good shape for this but you do need to check the power supply first before putting known good parts in the board.
Good luck!
Mike

thanks Mike - will do some reseating. Now you have me worried about a second machine whose fan is noisy. I think somewhere I must have a utility to measure temps.

found a neat program on my system - "sensors-detect"
as root it probed the hardware but found no sensors (am not running very recent hardware). Had it found sensors it suggested installing a kernel module to set up sensing which I didn't.

"sensors_detect" is part of the
"lm_sensors" package
. I don't know if it works will all chip sets but only the later systems have these sensors. You can use "lm_sensors" with the KDE "Ksensors" app or the GNOME "Hardware Sensors" panel applet. Fedora does not install it by default but it is in the repository.
