Last Saturday a Staff Sgt of the British Logistic Corps ,on his last day of tour was killed while attempting to de-activate a  bomb .He was a very experienced technician in the Royal Logistic Corp -the regiment that specialises in  explosive devices  used in ambush or booby traps.

That job -along with snipers and others is one of  the most  dangererous  jobs in any  army.

But soldiers and sailors and airmen and marines and so many other uniformed folk just carry-it is their way.

Sir Hemlock ,

Maybe The Sgt was preoccupied with going home , perhaps .

Most bomb disposal that I've seen and I've seen a few , was simply done by blowing up the device with another device .

It may well be that this was not possible in the Sgt's case , whatever the Queen lost a good man . .

Sir Hemlock ,

Since none of us will leave this world alive , the Sgt's number may well have been up , hate to see a good man go though .

A point well known to fighting men.

Sir Hemlock ,

Since the pay is minimal , there must be something else that motivates men of war .

That is a good and valid observation.

Most folk like that seem to have an ON/OFF switch withing them .But some I have met may not be outgoing -but loners.

Perhaps it's an addiction to adrenalin  (in the form of needing challenge-adventure-or danger.

I know press on regardless types can be very dangerous among the less motivated -and often very good-but life expendable.

Those who marry tend to have problems -or when released from service  need to find similar employment  or their lives and others fall apart.

Death and glory -for such action people they often come at the same time. But there is a strange clock within them -that drives them -a compulsion -an addiction ,and yet some just switch off after the event and carry on with the gardening or DIY
