MYM will not run directly under any version of Windows 7 64 bit; however, it will run on 64 bit versions in Windows XP Mode, which is a free download for purchasers of Windows 7 PRO or higher.  Windows XP Mode is a fully licensed Windows XP SP3 virtual machine that runs on Windows Virtual PC 7.  There are other virtual machine methods that will work also.

Method 1:  Windows XP Mode (You must be running Windows 7 PRO or higher)

Step 1.  Go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx  Make sure your hardware supports virtual pc by using the tool in step 2 of the page.  Follow the instructions on the page to download and install XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC 7.

Step 2.  Start XP Mode.  You should already have an internet connection from your Windows 7 install.  Go to http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/ and download and install Security Essentials.  This is Microsoft's free anti-virus and malware program.

Step 3.  Open Windows Explorer, create a folder called MYM in C:\, and copy your MYM12 files into it.  They can be on a CD or a USB drive; XP Mode will recognize both.

Step 4.  Right click the mym.exe file, and select Properties.  (Anytime you change an entry, if the Apply button is present and no longer grayed out, click on it.)  Select the Program tab.  Command line should read "C:\MYM\MYM.EXE" (without the quotes), and Working line should read C:\MYM.  Run line should read Normal Window.  Click the Advanced button.  The Autoexec file name should be C:\Windows\System32\AUTOEXEC.NT, and the Config file name should be C:\Windows\System32\CONFIG.NT.  Click OK.  Select the Font tab, and check that Available types is set to Both font types, and Font size to Auto.  Select the Memory tab, and check that Conventional memory entries are both Auto, Expanded and Extended memory are None, and MS-DOS protected mode memory is Auto.  Select the Compatibility tab, and verify that nothing is checked.  Select Misc tab, and check that everything is checked except Mouse.  Select Screen tab, set Usage to Window, and verify the remaining entries are checked.  Exit the Properties window.

Step 5.  Right click on mym.exe file again, and select Send To.  Select Desktop (create shortcut).  A shortcut to MYM.EXE will appear on the desktop.  Right click the shortcut, and select Properties.  Insure entries for all the tabs are the same as step 4 above.  If you have the icon file for MYM version 12, you can change the shortcut icon in the Program tab.  Close the Properties window.

Step 6.  Double click the shortcut to start MYM.  You cannot get MYM to run full scree

Hoo boy!  That's a lot of reading, incl. the continuation.  I didn't read all the detail but is all that detail about MYM set-up really necessary to get MYM to run under Win 7 64-bit?   In case you haven't seen them, there are other threads about inability to run MYM under 64-bit including Windows Vista 64-bit.

As an XP user who has never used Vista or 7 or (as far as I know) 64-bit, and has used MYM for 24 years and counting, I have a few questions:
  • I assume 64-bit Windows is for 64-bit machines
  • how necessary is 64-bit and for what?
  • how common are 64-bit machines and Windows?
  • why couldn't I live happily ever after on a 32-bit machine?

I have a related question: How can I tell exactly what version of Windows 7 I have installed and whether it is the 32 bit or 64 bit version? I just bought a new computer that came with Windows 7 preinstalled and I can't find any way to make it reveal the version. In previous Windows versions you could find in the Control Panel exaclty what version you had right down to the build #. I can't find such info anywhere on this machine.

I have seen the other threads about running (or not running) MYM under 64 bit Vista, and while true that it won't run directly in 64 bit VISTA,   MYM can be run in 64 bit VISTA using either DOSBox or Windows Virtual PC 2007 with an XP or Windows 2000 or 32 bit VISTA virtual machine.  There are also other virtual solutions that will work

Your questions:

Yes, you must have a 64 bit capable computer to run a 64 bit operating system.  Most computers less than 3 years old are capable, but you should use one of the tools available for free to be sure.

It isn't necessary to run a 64 bit OS, but that is most certainly the trend we're headed too.  Microsoft has even hinted that its next OS will be 128 bit.  It won't be too much longer before most software is released in 64 bit, so if you want to run it, you'll need a 64 bit OS or a virtual solution.

They will be very common shortly.  If you read the ads for new computers, you'll see that most are coming with 64 bit Windows preloaded.

You can be happy for a few years (maybe five), but sooner or later there will be no support from Microsoft for 32 bit OSs.

Regards

Walt

Start, Control Panel, System and Security, System.  Your OS will be under System Type.

in Windows XP I right-click My Computer -- either on your desktop or in Start menu -- then click on Properties.  Hopefully not too different in Win 7 (hah!).
