I agree totally with NYT technology writer David Pogue's big thumbs up for this incredibly useful, easy to use tool you just drag to your browser.  Clears all the clutter from webpages - and you read without any distraction.
Its free. I love this thing.

How long have you been using it?  Which browser?

I just started using it - its one of those amazingly simple tools that is so useful.
I'm using FireFox - I just tried it in Internet Explorer - I could not drag the tool to the bookmark bar - but my IE version is kind of old.  If you don't use FireFox it would be imo worth the effort to send a note to the authors about IE Explorer.

I use IE and also was not able to drag it to my toolbar.  However, I could save Readability to my Favorites and then place it on my start menu.  It works quite well on each URL I have tried.

Thanks

Dan

Dan - I am unable to get the Readability to my start menu.   I'm using Vista.  Any suggestions?
Thanks

I have Readability running, but I don't like it as it removes useful information from some web pages.  If one does not go back to the original page, as intended, one misses critical information.  I see where it might be useful if the web site is throwing up ads that cover up critical links, as sometimes happens on this forum.

I just checked one site I use frequently, and by activating Readability, the site is rendered useless as one cannot see the sub-sites that are linked from the main web page.  All access to the inner pages vanish.  How useful is that?

Karen

I simply added it to my favorites list and then added it to my Start Menu. I recall it was done via a right click.

However after using it a few times I encountered difficuclties similar to what Lowell mentioned plus I noticed some erratic operations that may or may not have been associated withr Readability.  In any case I removed it from my PC.

Sorry if those that tried readability did not find it helpful.
Perhaps I am reading different types of web pages than you are - because I really like it.
I am reading things like specific NYT or Wash. Post articles - I don't want to look at any side bar links - just the article is all I want to read or see.

I agree if the page has lots of things going on that you also want to read - no its not useful.
So no I won't use it for every single web site I read - only with longer print articles.

ps - I learned my lesson I won't recommend any more "tools" that I find cool.

Nonsense!  I think it's wonderful.  I can't stand pages that blink, flash and wave at me when I'm trying to read something.

It's totally at the user's discretion whether and when to use it.  Furthermore, as the article says, if after you click it you want the extraneous information back, all you have to do is refresh the page.
