It means that the mail server is/was down at the time. This has nothing to do with the mail application you're using.

Please define "sending through Netscape". Why don't you send mail through your ISP SBCGlobal? Is your account at isp.netscape.com? Please, more specifics

.

i have always had an sbcglobal.net em address. i have always received em's at that address, sent em's from that address, and filed em's from that address through netscape. my  address book is in netscape, my bookmarks are in netscape, my em files are in netscape, etc.

The error message you're receiving is not a problem in "Netscape" but rather generated from the recipient's mail service at Prodigy.

any idea what that means or how to fix the problem?
it appears to me that most if not all of the em's that are being returned are sbcglobal.net and pacbell.net em addresses.
my em address is an sbcglobal.net em address.
what is Prodigy?

The error message means that the service is not available on the other end, not your end. The problem is not on your end, only the ISP on the other end can fix it.

Prodigy is a service much like SBCGlobal, an ISP. It appears you sent a mail to someone subscribe to Prodigy and Prodigy is the one that generated the error message.

i appreciate your knowledge and help by the way,
when i send an em to myself or anyone else with an sbcglobal or pacbell em address while on netscape, it gets returned.
when i send the same em while on att.yahoo the em goes through.

In that case check your outgoing server settings to see if they match the att.yahoo settings. Or just check with your ISP to see if any settings have changed such as a new authentication setting. It's not a Netscape problem if you can use Netscape to successfully send mail.

again, thanks for all of your help.
i contacted at&t my isp. they say my settings all are correct.
they do not support netscape, so they cannot trouble shoot netscape.
i explained to them that em's to other domains go through when i send through netscape and that it is only at&t domain (sbcglobal.net, pacbell.net, yahoo.com) em's that are coming back.
