Hi,

This barebones kit along with the Video card which I think will serve my needs, and the monitor are what I believe is what I will purchase in a few days.  Anyone have any thoughts on this setup?  It's not a screamer but I think it will do the job and is modern, and faster that what I have now.

Intel Core i5 Socket 1156 Barebone Kit - Intel DP55WB MOBO, Intel Core I5 750 CPU, 4GB DDR3, 750GB HDD, Apex Case, 750 Watt PSU at TigerDirect.com  $509.00

XFX Radeon HD 5770 Video Card - 1GB GDDR5, PCI-Express 2.0, CrossFireX Ready, Dual DVI, Display Port, HDMI at TigerDirect.com
$74.99

Viewsonic VX2433wm 24" Class Widescreen HD LCD Monitor - 1920 x 1080, 20000:1 Dynamic, 2ms GTG, HDMI, DVI, VGA, ECO Mode, Tilt Stand, w/ Speakers at TigerDirect.com  $199.99

The total cost if it stays the same is not bad, but the cost could change?

Decent CPU and MB, should work well...

Note that Intel motherboards are ALL SATA - no IDE port on them and most likely ALL USB - no PS/2 ports either, in case you were planning on re-using parts (I did not see any Optical drive in the parts list)...

Hi Dale,

That's one I forgot, the optical drive.  I suppose this has to be SATA.  Yes no PS2 port for a mouse or keyboard. My current mouse uses USB and so does the keyboard. And no floppy drive. :-(

If you have problems in finding a SATA Optical drive -- I haven't checked recently -- you could probably find a PCI card with an IDE controller on it and use that -- or get an external Optical drive and use USB. THis would allow you to use the optical drive with other computers including eg netbooks that notably come without them normally.

Hi Hugh,

I think this DVD-RW/CD-RW will work and it is SATA.

MSI DH-24AAS-17
Internal DVD Writer - DVD+R 24X, DVD-R 24X, DVD+RW 8X, DVD-RW 6X, DVD-RAM 12X, CD-R 48X, CD-RW 32X, SATA.  This also is offered by TigerDirect.com.  39.99

But I will still will have to live without a Floppy drive.  Or buy an external one (USB).

Fine if you found one at a reasonable price. When I got mine Plextor only had the one SATA drive so I got that but when I wanted another the next generation model was only IDE but that was a few years ago.

Hi Hugh,

I see alot of DVD drives at TigerDirect, but if they are SATA, IDE or USB?  And then there are external and internal drives.  I sort of like the old days when everything just about was internal.  But as long as what I want or need is avaiable, I will be happy.  Heck fter I buy and build this computer it will be getting old.  But it is better than what I have.  But what I have still works.  I just want something that is modern.

There are many SATA optical drives on the market - I use an LG and a LiteON one in my production box.  Both work fine...

>>no floppy drive

Windows 7 does not retuire a floppy from drivers - it can use thumb drives for that.  I doubt the floppy will be missed...

Hi Scott,

I found the same system at tigerdirect.ca for $589.  Very good price.  But, I could not locate that motherboard # on the intel website.

Hi Dale,

As far as the floppy drive.  I've always had one, though it is rarely used anymore except when I need to basically install WinXP.  As I need to install the drivers for the Promise controller card I have installed.  Vista also need this to be done.

With this new computer, this would not be needed.  I suppose I will eventually buy an external floppy drive.  Just so I have a floppy drive.  I suppose a sort of new to computers person who never had or used a floppy drive would never miss or need one.   I still have many many things on floppy disks, if they could be used on a Windows 7 computer?  I suppose many will run on 32-bit Windows 7.  But if they would work on a 64-bit Windows 7, I don't know.  Most of these programs are old games that I have not used for years.

Dale,

Isn't a diskette drive needed to do a flash BIOS upgrade?  Or, do the new BIOSes have an alternative solution?

Hi Ron,

I found it using the search engine BING. (Microsofts search).  I like the Intel® Desktop Board DP55WB Product Guide,  in pdf format.  I have downloaded it.  Everything is in it including how to update the BIOS from a download to the hard drive, to a USB flash drive.  This from http://support.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/

All this is in the manual (product guide)

Sorry Scott,

I found it as well.  I thought it ended with a "D" instead of a "B".  My mistake.

Unfortunately, that won't do for me as I need more than one conventional PCI slot.  TigerDirect mentions 2.

Thanks,

Ronald

Probably depends on the BIOS brand and generation -- my current Award BIOS can be updated on line from the ASUS website, from a floppy, from a thumbdrive ...... probably anything! It's reversible too ....

Most modern bioses can either be upgraded from a thumb drive or from within Windows itself.  If a bootable device is required, a thumb drive can be created that boots into DOS.  I did that myself for one  system...

Far more reliable than floppies, BTW...

Ok Dale, I had that in mind too to use a flash drive (I suppose that's what you mean by thumb drive), but I sure wouldn't know how to make it boot-able though.

Hi Ron,

Yes it has just one.  I wish it had alot more of each type.  But I guess this is a cheaper motherboard or this type.  It says it will take an i7 processor, but I don't know if it would take the i7 - 975 processor?
Anyway I guess I have to use whatever card that matches the slot that is available.

1ea PCI bus connector

1ea PCI Express 2.0 x1 connector
1ea PCI Express 2.0 x1 connector     2 total

1ea PCI Express 2.0 x16 connector

There's an HP tool that I use for the bootable process.  You still need DS files available for it to install, but the tool knows the magic to make things happen...

Thumb/Flash/whatever - all mean the same thing in this contect...
