Are today's elections in some manner a poll on President Obama?

As an AP article in today's Netscape News has it:

Given that Democrats control the White House and Congress, defeats in Virginia - a new swing state in national elections - or New Jersey - a Democratic stronghold - would be setbacks for the White House, even though both states having long histories of electing governors from a political party opposite that of the president.

After all, this is a president who won a year ago in an electoral landslide after building a fundraising and organizational juggernaut that attracted scores of new voters into what Obama loyalists have called a movement. And this is a party that has comfortable majorities in the House and Senate - and that controls governor's mansions in Virginia and New Jersey.
  See this link for more.

When you go to the polls for local elections, is the government in Washington D.C. on your mind?

Or is local politics just that--local?

How do your local elections reflect on national trends?

Do you pay attention to elections in other cities and states in considering your own vote?

Tell us what you think!

When you go to the polls for local elections, is the government in Washington D.C. on your mind? statewide elections....yes. local town elections...no...IMO

Or is local politics just that--local? ...same as above....local town elections are (or should be) local...IMO

How do your local elections reflect on national trends? ...I recall the 2006 local elections reflected national trends and ended many long time political careers on the local level....through no fault of their own.

Do you pay attention to elections in other cities and states, in considering your own vote? No.

Tell us what you think! historically...extreme volatile issues on the national level (such as the Iraq war, Watergate, tanking economy, Iran hostage situation) will ususally sway voters to seek a drastic political party change..locally as well as nationally.

On the other hand, I know you're watching some of those local elections -- particularly the one in New York, where Palin endorsed the third party candidate, and the Republican candidate dropped out and endorsed the Democrat.

In Pennsylvania, this is a very local election with voting for judges, some mayors and city council seats, and things like that.  Philadelphia is not electing a mayor, and although Pittsburgh is, the election there is based entirely on local issues.

On the national level, while three elections don't have much real effect, it could have a psychological effect that would be negative for the Administration.

If the economy is improved(defined as improvments in both jobs and home sales) by fall, it won't matter.  If the economy is stagnant or down, the Democrats will lose a fair # of seats.

Here in Northeastern Ohio, there's a big FBI corruption probe into the county government.  As a result, there are two different propositions on the local ballot that are aimed at reforming the county government.  One's a complete reorganization.  The other's a proposal to form a study group that'll put forth a reorganization on next year's ballot.

Each of the two proposals is blatantly political.  The slate for one is heavily Republican, and the other is heavily Democratic.  As this is almost always a Democrat-dominated area, the latter would normally be favored.  But people are so upset about the FBI probe, we could see an unusual increase in GOP influence here.

But the BIG issue is casino gambling -- which has been thrice rejected in Ohio already.  Go figure.

I don't know about New Jersey, but in Virginia which is right next door (and we see all the ads - thankfully ending today), it appears to be primarily a local election based on statewide and local issues rather than anything on the national scene.  As in virtually all Virginia elections, it's been primarily about taxes and transportation - with an unhealthy dose of the usual conservative social issues thrown in.  They haven't been talking about national issues like Health Care.  I can't recall seeing anything from the GOP about Obama throughout this campaign.

Obama won Virginia last year, the first time a Democrat had won there since LBJ.  That was partly because of enormous turnout in the African-American community and in Northern Virginia.  Early reports today indicate a very light turnout, which can't be good news for Democratic candidate Creigh Deeds.  Last week, Obama came to campaign for Deeds, who was running an ad with a clip from Obama's appearance through the weekend.  But Deeds has run an awful campaign - focused way too much on Republican Bob McDonnell's association with Pat Robertson and some rather extreme opinions about women's rights, etc. from 20 years ago.  It would be astonishing if Deeds managed to pull it off.

The New York Congressional special election seems to have some national implications, but it's much more about the future of the Republican Party than about the Obama Administration.

Yes, I am watching that race, but not because I think it is in some manner a poll on President Obama, and not because I think it reflects on national trends.

I just happen to find the NY 23rd district congressional race an interesting race to watch because it has so so many unusual and even peculiar characteristics.

I sometimes wonder why that sort of thing keeps showing up on the ballots again and again.  Do you know if any of the polls have been showing a steady shift toward acceptance of the idea, or is it just the same persistent special interest groups that keep getting it on the ballot?

Actually, in Pennsyslvania,  casino gambling has never been on a ballot.  The legislature passed a slots bill about four years ago, and will probably pass table games in the next week or so.  Here, it's purely a revenue issue, and the folks who oppose it morally never had a chance.

I forgot one hot button issue here, which is the Supreme Court election.  They're fighting over the Luzerene County(Northeastern Pa) scandle in which judges were bribed by a private juvenille detention facility to place kids with that facility.  One fifteen year old girl was given a six month sentence for making mean remarks about her school principle on her web site.

I don't know about New Jersey//

The New Jersey election is about how stupid Gov. Corzine is.  The Democrats think he's only a little stupid, and the Republicans think he is very stupid.

It's a close call IMO.

**If we're having any elections today around here, I've seen no signs of it.**

other than a few people holding campaign signs on bridges and at street corners, you'd never know we were having elections today either.  in my state (WA), all but one county has switched completely to mail-in ballots.  the vast majority of votes were cast weeks ago.

usually there are tons of people with campaign signs on the day of -- or shortly before -- voting day.  there have hardly been any this time.  it's been nice.  <g>

As much as it pained me to vote for a stupid constitutional amendment, I did vote for the casino gambling amendment for three reasons. 1. the Columbus Dispatch opposed it. 2. So did the religious right. 3. Let 'em gamble.

Texas, and we have all our local elections in May.   Running some errands this evening, I saw that the local polling place appeared to be open, and checking online, it appears that we might have had some constitutional amendments to vote on.

I voted against the Casino issue myself, but it appears to be passing narrowly just now -- nothing worth counting on, but it could make it.  And the Democrats appear to have lost two Governors --but to have won in that New York Congressional race where the Republican candidate was driven out by right-wingers in her own party, such as Palin.

The casino issue won, and so did issues two and three.

Are you talking about that congressional district in New York where the leftist named to run by the Republicans pulled out and endorsed the Democrat? <g>

So, not only do you keep insisting, falsely, that I am a member of the Republican party, but now you are saying, again falsely, that I am somehow in talk radio. Good job!
