According to Gary Yontef, PHD, Gestalt therapy is a phenomenological-existential therapy founded by Frederick (Fritz) and Laura Perls in the 1940s. It teaches therapists and patients the phenomenological method of awareness, in which perceiving, feeling, and acting are distinguished from interpretation. More on process (what is happening) than content (what is being discussed). The emphasis is on what is being done, thought and felt at the moment rather than on what was, might be, could be, or should be.

I doubt if it changed many lives because it's too real and doesn't blame anyone.

What does this have to do with the Religion Forum?

Much as I am not a fan of Stover's perpetual nonsense ....

There is some connection.

I use Gestalt in teaching algebra - our minds impose structures upon perceptions (perhaps algebraic structures) which are not intrinsically a part of the sense perception.

Duck-Rabbit (Rabbit Season! Duck Season! Rabbit Season! Duck Season! Rabbit Season! Duck Season! Rabbit Season! Duck Season! Rabbit Season! Duck Season! ) Someone tell Bugs and Daffy to shut up.

So, about religion? Gestalt? An omnipotent God? Free will? Hmmmmmmmm.....

I'm afraid Perls isn't quite talking about the same thing.  He calls his brand of snake oil gestalt therapy" but what comes out is totalitarianism on the part of the therapist.

I've seen cases where the followers of Perls have made their clients even worse by demanding they be "open".  I've got some great personal anecdotes about my encounter with gestalt "marriage counseling."

The method of "postulating" what we want has many advantages;
they are the same as the advantages of theft over honest toil.

Well, therapy is usually nonsense.

I use Gestalt when I introduce the idea of a mathematical function.

A function is an equation - but don't look at it that way - it's an IO-machine - but don't always look at it that way, either - it's ....

Except for the cognitive-behavioral sort, which addresses the behavior pretty directly.  Otherwise, I pretty well agree with you and used to be the bane of my clinically-oriented colleagues.

I told them that I had a great idea for therapy.  The client's unhappiness is caused by too much money.  He can fix that problem by giving his money to me, thus passing along his unhappiness which I will reluctantly take on saving him from himself.<g>

For some reason, they didn't think that humorous.

How about (to paraphrase Flip Wilson as Geraldine) "What you see (reality) is what it is (the divine)".
