One of the E-mail lists I subscribe to is a Freebies list (Actually I get two of them) and one listed THIS LINK to a Free E-Book and Audio book club site

Now,, this site is a bit confusing,, Because when you click on a link you get another page that has "Request Download Ticket" at the top

Click on Request download ticket,, and if you follow the right path, You get a RAR file, that, when un-packed with Win-RAR, will give you an LIT file, which when opened with The LIT-Reader (Which I got from A-Z downloads as the one I tried to get direct from Microsoft did not work) gives you...

Fifty six books by Anne McCaffery....

Or you can get books by several other authors

(You will have to scroll down quite a ways to find the books I mention in this post)

Including most, if not all, of the PERN books

The E-Reader I have will also read them to me.. Decent voice.. (But I only read "Graphical image, Graphical image" by computer..

SO far the list look good. I'll be downloading a few more books soon.

(I have the 56 books mentioned, and a Dean Koontz thriller just now.. More later

John,

The question is, are these pirated copies? Dollars to doughnuts most of them are. You'll notice that the site is careful to say nothing about the provenance of the copies -- only that they were "found on the web."

Considering the amount of times I've seen this site advertised on the web.. I'm inclined to believe they are legit.. however I have not the resources to check it out.

The best I can say is that it did not trip any alarms,, Electronic or mental, and considering some of the electronic alarms I have.. That's something.

John,

Fifty six books by Anne McCaffery....

That's all very well, and since I own pretty much everything Anne wrote in hard copy I'm not so worried about it if it's pirated; it's just what I already own transferred to a different medium. (I would NOT knowingly download a book that might be pirated that I do not already own, however.  The author must be paid.)

But the .rar file (which I had to download a reader for) is password protected, so I still can't open it. Any hints?

Cassy

Any Hints... Yes, in fact 2 of 'em  I think the first one does it.. DO NOT FORGET THE UNDERSCORE

password 1: books_for_all
password 2: www.freebookspot.com

As I recall, Password 1 did the trick on all the files I downloaded that needed one.

Note that this information was yet another downloaded file from the web page :) (Well, 2 lines of it. the actual file is a tad longer)

John,

Ok, now I can unlock them... I note that at least some have Russian headers.

This disquiets me; it makes me inclined to agree with Bill that these are pirated books.

It also makes me worried about trojan horses.

I think I'll stick with buying books, or downloading free books from publisher's sites and the Gutenberg Project.

Cassy

None of the ones I've see have headers in anything other than english.  Though a few do have some typos... I've seen no evidence of any mal-ware and I have good anti-mal-ware software on this box.

That said... I've not downloaded all that many

It appears the host web site is a Yahoo Group.. ... But frankly the key word is "Appears"

The .doc documents in the Arthur C. Clarke batch had headers with Russian URLs.

As I said, my Anti-mal-ware software has not hit on anything, and I do have that file on the disk,, Just have not looked at it yet.

Fifty-six (56)?  Do these all eminate from the same fingers on the keyboard, or is Anne McCaffrey a publishers house nom for a series of books that may be written by multiple uncredited actual authors?

Best regards,  4merCL

About ten of those books are team-ups with other authors.  The rest ... well, she's been writing full-time for more than forty years, consistently turning out one or two books per year for that entire period.  Do the math.

One of the questions that has been brought up is are these authroized.. Well. I just finished re-reading one of the books I have in my paper library and there were enough scan errors Things like This being turned into th)5 or some such to convince me they may well not be...

Although it appears the page may be a yahoo group and I have problems believing some of the host servers would allow non-approved content... Still.. There are a lot of errors like that in the files.

So.. Who knows.

Of course of those 56 books... I already own most of the ones I'd care to read :)

I found another "Free Book" site as well.. And this one I'm fairly sure IS legit

It's Amazon's Kindle Store

Go to Amazon.com, , And in the search box put: Kindle for PC

you can then download a Kindle E-Book reader for your PC (it's free) and instell it. Register it with your amazon user address and password

now you can go to the Kindle Book store and in the drop down box for the search choose PRICE LOW to HIGH

You will get a list (I only viewed 15 pages) of free books ONE of which is "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" Which I read in high school.

Another, IN fact a bunch, are by H.G. Wells

I now have at least 2 weeks reading (more like 2 months considering how much time to read) and these are Kindle Edition books.. Fully authorized.  NO CREDIT CARD NEEDED

They're free because they're out of copyright. There are tens of thousands of free books available at Project Gutenburg.  LINK  You don't need to download any special reader software or give Amazon your information or anything....

I know but Amazon does not have my credit card either.... And I already had an amazon account cause I've shopped there in the past.

One of the things that has bothered me about the Kindle is the cost... The free PC application addresses that issue.

I also will be bookmarking the link you gave me as they too have files for the reader, and in fact most every reader I have on the hard drive, which includes Adobe Acroread, Microsoft's LIT reader, Several Text reader/editors and of course Kindle for PC.

On Edit... Snagged a few books from  your link yesterday

The 1st edition of the Boy Scout's Handbook (A handy reference manual, and some of the stuff in it will never change)  Some H.G. Wells.. And more
