Hi, all!

So I've started watching Stargate Universe.  So far I mostly like it, although there are a couple of characters I find most annoying.  As with Stargate Atlantis it's the scientist.  Why do they do that?

It's sorta like Voyager. Pretty soon we'll get tired of their not getting home.

Dear Mike,

I find Dr. Rush as a not very likeable character and the last episode implied that he might be a self-righteous bastard. Dr.McKay from StarGate Atlantis in comparison is much more likeable.
I have my own problems with the series. It has been compared according to TV Guide to Voyager, Battlestar Galactica and even 'Lost'.
So far to me it is mainly a drama that is set in a Science Fiction setting as was Battle Star Galactica. But the stories are not at enticing and not up to that superb level of writing. The only aliens that we have had a glimpse of were "gusts of wind" on that planet which were supposed to be ancients. I did read that there was the intention of introducing aliens that were truly alien. If no aliens were introducted it would have been like Galactica but the latter had the "Cylons" trying to destoy them which made the stories interesting. I would quit this series probably within the 2nd season if there were no aliens. How many stories of 'food, power, water, air shortages, could you take. I certainly would find that most people wouldn't put up with 5 years of this. Anyway, aliens should be introduced and the soon the better.

Jared

Dude, You're a moderator --didn't you realize you were posting this in the wrong folder?

As to the annoying scientists in the SG franchise: Rush is a whole new kind of annoying. He doesn't compare to Rodney McKay of Atlantis at all, who was annoying while always trying his best to do the right thing even in the face of his own cowardliness. Rush, on the other hand, is a villain, or close to one anyway, and right within the ranks of these people who are desperate to get home. I wouldn't even compare the two.

(In best Richard Nixon Voice) - "t's not illegal when the President does it."

I've seen a couple episodes, and I think it has potential, but...

The writers don't seem to have a clear idea what story they want to tell.  Are they writing a survival story with elements of exploration?  Or are they writing a story of exploration with elements of survival?

It's too dark.  I mean that literally.  I can't see a damn thing on Destiny.  I know it's supposed to be old and decrepit, but if it has enough power to zip between galaxies, it can spare the power for a couple of light bulbs.

The character of Rush needs to be handled very carefully.  He can be unlikeable, but for that to work, most of the time he has to be right.  If he's cast as a cardboard villian who always comes up with the dangerous and wrong thing to do, the question in the viewers' minds will quickly be "why doesn't someone insure that he has an 'accident'".  That doesn't mean that he has to always be right, or even that he can't on occassion be spectacularly wrong - but he can't be an arrogant jackass in a leadership position who is wrong all the time.  That's simply not consistent with human nature.  He has to be more than just Zachary Smith on steroids.

It's a little early to tell yet. We're only four installments in at the moment after all.

Well, after Dark and Light, it's clear that Rush is Zachary Smith.  They had the possibility of making him a complex character, but by strongly insinuating that he knew the solution all along, they turned him into a mustache-twirling villain.  For no good reason - it doesn't make any sense for him to keep his mouth shut,

Well, they don't trust him, and apparently he doesn't wan to be trusted on top of it, that's why he was the only one with a sourpuss in that scene. However, the charge was only barely credible at best, and the bulk of the evidence showed that Rush didn't know they would survive. He saw the flight path of the ship, and it was headed straight for the star, combined with the extreme age of the Destiny, he had every reason to believe they wouldn't survive, and even if he suspected that the ship might protect itself and its inhabitants given the prior evidence which showed that to be its method of operation, there was no reason to believe that they wouldn't blow up as a result of systems failure. Aside from which, Rush openly admitted to Eli that he was never so happy to have been flat-out wrong in his life prior to Young leveling the accusation at him.

I don't think it's really quite as bad as you make it sound as of right now, but that's not to say that it won't get there before long. I just hope that it doesn't happen however.

Well, it's not at the level of "get this cheese to sickbay" bad or even "brain, brain what is brain" bad.  But it's certainly squandering a lot of potential.
